Default Post Office grade SC&T(P) in 1927.

In November 1927 my uncle was appointed to the SC&T GPO grade in Birmingam. Since 1923 he had been a postman/ messenger in Spalding. I suspect that the SC part of this rank stands for Sorting Clerk and P may refer to a probation period before full appointment, but can anyone tell me what the T indicates please?

    Thanks,

    Paul

Possibly Telegraph or Telephone, because back in those days the phone system was run by the Post Office.

Couldn't remember my dad's title when he transferred to the clerical side after being a postman but have just looked him up and he was a P & TO - Postal and Telegraph Officer. (Though that was 1950s.)

Did you find this on Ancestry? The advice on the search page actually points you to the answer.

"Some records contain the job the worker was appointed to and the The Postal Museum’s website has the abbreviations in their Family History Guide."

    SC&T = Sorting Clerk & Telegraphist

Thank you all for your very quick responses. Telegraphist did occur to me, but it didn't seem to fit with sorting mail. Yes, Peter, I did find the original entry on Ancestry but clearly didn't read everything. I guess I was too excited having found what I'd been hoping to find.

    Thanks again.
