Hi Pam, Looking at the original, both entries are handwritten and at the bottom of the page, the one with MMN Smith has been crossed through suggesting MMN Catterick is the correct one. I can only assume that the mother of Rose M C Lepetit was known by both names, but only seeing the certificate(s) will make it clear.

I wasn’t sure if the ‘a’ suggested adoption.

Kathleen is that your tree on Ancestry? If so have you recently added Edith Ellen and her parents & siblings?

    Hi Pamela

Yes that’s me! I found that Edith Ellen and added her in, in part because of the Gravesend connection (her place of work at the time of Mabel’s birth) I’m now unsure though, as she would have been 27 in 1915 and that just seems ‘old’

Not at all old, Kathleen, as not all unmarried mothers were young women.

I've been looking at births for Edith Ellen Smith born 1886 +/- 10yrs. As Edith was described as a cook on Mabel's birth certificate I would expect her to be nearer to 20 plus. Cooks need some experience in kitchen work first.
