    Major Edward Harman Pope died July 1848 and is buried in Carlow, he was a Justice of the Peace.

    His son Thomas Harman Pope was the person who taught the famous Irish Beasley Brothers to ride, Thomas Pope was their Uncle, most of them went onto be professional jockeys and Harry Beasley won the Grand National 3 times IIRC.

    Thomas Harman Pope's sister, Harriet married Joseph Lapham Beasley.

    The date identifies "date commissioned" but the OCR read has failed to capture the last character. However, checking elsewhere in the publication it has Thomas Pope's date of commission as 7 July 1766.

    Popefield was an Encumbered Estate so it was sold, some of the Popes went to live with my relatives at Rheban Castle and some at Skerries House.

    The Lease and Release document I referred to in an earlier post was for land in KILLENEGARD where Popefild was located.

    Yes, the case very similar to many of the Encumbered estates that were put up for sale around that time, they borrowed money against the land and events didn't turn out well, the Potato famine and its knock effects played a big part.

    Thomas H Pope was in so much debt he disappeared to Australia where he died in 1884.

    I find that the Deeds registry is very good for leads, the Irish are always very careful about land you probably know this but I will post the link for anyone in the future
