Post Weeks Family in Thanet Is

Hi, I am another newbie from British Columbia Canada:
I am researching the Weeks Family (my surname) at the time they resided on Thanet Is Kent. I have located my Great-Grandfather George Horace John Weeks (b. about 1841) and his spouse Elizabeth Ann Weeks (nee Martin) (b. about 1849), who were married in 1869 or thereabouts, and had 5 children (including my Grandfather Walter James).

I am having difficulty identifying the Father and Mother of George HJ Weeks; their names, birthdates, place of residence, and the names and number of children they had.

I will be grateful for any information that other members might have. Many thanks.

Although the civil registration of BMDs came into being in England and Wales in 1837 there are lots of incidences where for about 20 years or so some births were not registered. I cannot find a birth registration for George.

Copies of births marriage and death certificates can be bought from the General Register Office, and I think that you need to buy George and Elizabeth's marriage certificate, because that will give you his father's name.

    https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

The details that you need to order the certificate are as follows:
George Weeks married Elizabeth Martin Qtr Jan 1869 Thanet Vol 2a Page 945

If you place an order do not include the middle names that you have, because the GRO will only recognise the details shown above.

The only additional name I have been able to find for George is the initial "J".

I found him and Elizabeth in the 1881 Census as follows:
    1881 Census RG11 / Piece number 986 / Folio 38 / Page 27
46, Northumberland Road, Margate, Thanet, Kent

This says that he was born in 1843 in Margate.

The earliest census that I can find is the 1851 census:
    1851 Census HO107 / Piece number 1629/ Folio 374 / Page 2
5, Hawley Street, St Johns, Thanet, Kent, England

There he is 9 years old and living in the house of Edward and Charlotte Austin. Also there was a 12 year old William Henry Weeks. The relationship (if any) between the Austins and Weeks is not shown. William may have been George's brother.

I looked for William in the 1841 census without success.

There is this birth registration on the GRO index
George John WEEKS, mother's maiden name Shingleton
GRO Reference: 1841 December Quarter registration district ISLE OF THANET Vol 5 Page 410

    And this one
William Henry WEEKS, mother's maiden name Shingleston (note the spelling)
GRO Reference: 1838 September Quarter registration district ISLE OF THANET Vol 5 Page 401

So could this be the two brothers Megan found in the 1851 census?

The tree that Christina found is undoubtedly an excellent starting point because it is so well sourced and has photos and some certificates.

If you have Ancestry this is a link to it

I think that there is a lot more to be searched for - such as John and Charlotte's children before 1827.

    Hi Christina:
Many thanks for this information and taking the time to investigate and track my relatives. An interesting turn of events concerning George and William with the Austins (Austens)!
In order than I could research the public tree you have located, would I require a subscription to a genealogy website (e.g. Ancestry, etc) or is there some alternative?

    Thanks again.

    Hi Megan:
Thanks for the information and for taking the time to research my relatives!

In order that I could research the referenced tree of particular interest, would I require one of the subscriptions offered by Ancestry, or is there a better alternative that you are aware of?

    Thanks again

    Three suggestions:

    1. Ancestry have often special offers where they have an introductory free period. Keep an eye for those, but if you do not want to get automatically billed make sure that you untick the auto renew option on your account page.

    2. Here in the UK most public libraries offer free access. Its a more limited Ancestry edition, but I'm fairly certain that it includes the family trees.

3.You purchase a one month's subscription which is not too expensive (in the UK its about £24), and again remember to untick the auto renew option.
