Birth registrations for first and last children Ward to confirm that Mary A Ward is nee McCarthy. Findmypast have birth records I think for born at sea or overseas. So Mary A McCarthy had Ada when she was 18 years old.

Her mother then married a soldier on his way to India, it is possible that she went with him and Ada was left at Nazareth House in Portsmouth. At some point we believe she may have married John Thomas Woodward from Southwell Notts. but living in Peckham around 1894 when she would have been 16 yrs. old.
Any info on these people would begreatly appreciated.

Hello. I may have stumbled upon some info for you. I was looking up something else, which brought me here. (And I'm not very proficient on the computer so please excuse this if it is not helpful). There was a passenger on this ship named Ada Ward and she was noted as a "Miss". I don't know if maybe it was your grandmother leaving the African cape due to the war where her step-father was involved, since he was a soldier. I thought maybe you'd want to check it out. Ada is mentioned at the bottom of the second paragraph:

Maybe the names and dates don't add up but I thought I'd pass it along anyway. Best wishes.
