Default Trying to identify a grandfather

    Hello

I am looking to try and identify my mother in laws grandfather. We don’t have a date of birth but we do have his name and photographs of his time
In the Army. He was definitely wearing a HLI badge in WW2 and was believed to be a piper. He is supposedly from Scotland/Glasgow and we know he was in Shoeburyness and Germany in WW2. What is the hope of identifying him?

    Welcome to the British-Genealogy forums
If you came to us from Forces War Records reading this will explain the connection.
WW11 service records re still held by the MoD but you can apply for them at a cost of 30 pounds and at the moment there is a looooong wait for them. This 'sticky' explains and gives the link where you can download the application forms. You do not need a service number or regiment but you do need a copy of his death certificate and a date of birth.
We cannot post details of living people but if your mother-in-laws parents are not alive and she is willing we could help her find her grandfather's details. Does she have her parent's marriage certificate which would give her grandfather's age and father's name and occupation. Does she have any details of her grandfather's death year, his wife's maiden name, where they lived? Anything that can help us find his date of birth? We will gladly help in the search if your mother-in-law wishes to share some information, if not and he was born and lived in Scotland then ScotlandsPeople here is the site you will need to search for birth and marriage details. You can join and do free searches but to purchase certificates you will have to buy some credits.

FreeBMD here is the free site to search for BMD,s in Wales and England and you order certificates from the GRO https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
