Hi Catherine,

To consolidate Jill's post #9 and peanut's post #2, this is the direct link to the GRO website.
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/c...ates/login.asp

You can order black-and-white PDF copies of the early birth and death certificates for £7 each. Or you can opt for the certified full-colour red/pink birth or black death ones. They will cost you the same as all marriage certificates, which are certified, printed green, and are £11 each.

After creating an account, for the birth certificate use 'search the index', select birth, enter name, etc, click search.
To the left of the result you will see a radio button. Click that, and you will see an option to 'order this entry as a certificate or PDF'. Click on which one you prefer, and then everything is done automatically for you.

When ordering the marriage certificate you need 'Order a certificate', and then you have to enter the details as given by peanut in post #2. You only need to give one name, but you must make sure you spell it exactly as it's written in the GRO Index, otherwise you will be told that the record can't be found.
A free online copy of the GRO Index 1837-1983 can be found at https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
It's not yet complete for those years, and work has begun to extend the coverage to 1992, but the vast majority of the hundreds of millions of entries are there.
