Default Proudfoot/Bainbridge lost Great great Grandma

I think Ive got a far as I can with my search but would be interested in anyone elses idea to progress further.

My Great Granddad, John James Proudfoot was born 1880 in Farlam Cumberland.

In the 1881 census he is listed as living with James Bainbridge as his grandson. James has 3 sons who could have been the father.

I have his birth certificate which lists Jane Proudfoot as his mother and James as the informant but no father.

I dont see any way to identify the father now but Ive been trying to trace Jane with no luck

In 1881 there was a Jane Proudfoot living at West Linton (North of Farlam) as a servant, living near to a Bainbridge family! Maybe the Bainbridges took the child in and got Jane work through a family connection. She is listed as being born in Scotland so that was too wide an area to search

There was another Jane in the workhouse in Penrith in 1861 aged 8, so age wise she could be "the" Jane. This is the only trace of this Jane I can find.

    Cheers

What do you mean by “too wide an area”? I really think you should check the Scottish entry. People used to move back and forth across the Border, and Cumberland is one of the Border counties.
If the father is not listed on the birth certificate, and the child’s surname matched that of the mother, they were obviously not married. You could try of the baptism certificate - depending on the Minister, unmarried fathers are sometimes mentioned.

    Many thanks for the reply.

By too wide I meant there are a few jane proudfoots in scotland (its a pretty common border name) and without a town, village or DOBI wouldnt know how to identify her. Is there a way to get hold of the baptism record ? It hasnt been transcribed on ancestry.com

    Thanks

In 1891 John James Proudfoot is still with James & Margaret Bainbridge but is now listed as John James Bainbridge,grandson,10yrs.

    And in 1901 too.

How certain are you the Jane Proudfoot is the correct mother? Or this is the correct John James?
There were a few other John James Proudfoot born 1880. +/- 2 yrs.
