Hi
I'm the late Harry Johnson's daughter in law and on behalf of the family I'm trying to find out what he got 3 Oak leafs for. I realise he was mentioned in despatches but no one in the family knows why - can anyone help?
Many thanks
Janet

Welcome to the Brit-Gen forums
If you came to us from Forces War Records this explains the connection.
You will probably have to get your F-in-law's service record to see if it has any mention of why he received the Oak leaf awards. Was he named Harry on his birth certificate or Henry.
To apply you do not need a regiment or service number but you do need his date of birth and a copy of his death certificate and an application fee of 30 pounds. Unfortunately at the moment there is a very long wait which is explained in this 'sticky' where you can also download the application forms

This is the National Archives guide to gallantry awards -
https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/...lantry-medals/
They should have been announced in the London Gazette
https://www.thegazette.co.uk/
Bear in mind when searching the Gazette that it's an OCR system not a transcription by humans. The implication of this is that it isn't much point including the name of the award and the name of the person because they are unlikely to be on the same page.
Service number and surname usually yield the best results in my experience but others here are probably more experienced.

Thanks for this information Peter. Must admit I had tried the London Gazette and found nothing. Will now give it another go and see if I get it right this time.
