Red face Sgt Wm Connell #2793 in the 17th Foot

    Hello, hope this works.
My GGF. Sgt Wm Connell #2793 was in the 17th Foot, 1st batt. from 1849 to 1870, located in Castlebar, Galway 1851, Birr, Dublin 1853, Gibraltar 1854, Crimea 1855-56, Canada 1857-1859, Limerick (I think) 1863, Aldershot 1865, Curragh 1868-1870. I have info for some children but not the son born in 1853 possibly Dublin, nor daughter in 1863 possibly Limerick. Where might I find an army record of birth if born in a barracks area in those years (1853, 1863) ?

Also, his brother-in-law Michael Cleary in 17th also went to Canada same time, with his family and had more children there then transferred to RCR in 1865 and stayed in Canada. My GGF returned to Ireland or England in 1859. I do not know whether my GGF had his family with him in Canada.
How did families get there? on same troop ship or did they travel independently ?
    Anyone know?
    Johnny

    Welcome to the British-Genealogy forums
I have given your post a thread of its own and it is still in the Military - Army forum. I gave it the title
'Sgt Wm Connell #2793 in the 17th Foot'
Gortonboy is already on the case I see. I am sure others will be along too.

Have you proof that he served in these places, or have you looked at the history of the 17th Foot (this was a Leicester Regiment - am I correct?)

With the detail posted, I would assume he has his service record.

Thanks everyone for the replies. The daughter born in 1863 was Catharine, so it appears Gortonboy you have located it. Well done. I've only been looking for 10 years! Now, how do I go about getting copy of record which I hope will confirm date and place of birth and parents names? and can we do the same for John J born in 1853 possibly in Dublin ?
This is a great site. Thanks all for your help. Hope I can return the favour.
