I see the entry on the 1841 census. Are you certain this is your man? Where is Jane - his wife? Did she die before 1841? Were there any children from the marriage? You say that Thomas is described on William Basford marriage cert. Do you mean that you have a marriage cert. for a William and Thomas was listed as being the father?

Jane BASFORD appears to have died in 1863 in Edmonton, she is with her son William(who marries in 1852), on the 1851 & 1861 census in Edmonton. Jane appears to have been born in Adderbury Oxfordshire in 1781-2.
There is a Jane BASFORD in Lower Leyton, West Ham on the 1841 census aged 55 as a Female Servant born out of county who could be a possibility. HO107 piece 323 Book 16 folio 30 page 18.

Tracing someone from the 1841 census born out of county, who dies before the 1851 census, is extremely frustrating. I can see why you go for the Cheshire option as there are 3 baptisms 1782-1788, but I see there is also a baptism in Walthamstow Essex in 1790 which is closer to east London, as well as one in Staffordshire in 1786.
