    Welcome to British-Genealogy.

Firstly, are you interested purely in Matthew's time in the army, or are you looking for further information about him, and if so, exactly what? It's a waste of our time finding his marriage in 1409/whenever if you already know that.

However, before we can even start looking we need to know a little bit about Matthew. When he was born (just the year will do), possibly where, and most important of all - though we might be able to make a guess from his year of birth - what sort of time period was he in the army? 1880? 1918? 1940? 1960?

Start at the website of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission

    www.cwgc.org

Then go to the National Archives web site and search for the appropriate unit war diary. While you're at the National Archives site, follow the "Help with Your research" link from the home page.

Downloads are currently free of charge.

You wouldn't normally see any mention of ordinary soldiers in the war diary, but it does tell you all of the action he was involved in.

He appeared in the daily casualty lists as follows (NB the lists are published several weeks after the actual event):
13 Jul 1916 wounded, shock (shell)
    11Oct 1916 wounded
19 Feb 1917 killed (actual date of death 25 Jan)

Records show he was in the 6th Battalion and first embarked for overseas service on 17 Dec 1915, which is confirmed by the war diary, which starts with them landing at Le Havre on 18 Dec 1915. The entry for 25 Jan 1917 doesn’t report any action - in fact it says it was unusually quiet, although there was some hostile aircraft activity. I did wonder if he had died in hospital, but his record shows KIA not Died of Wounds, so it looks like he was just unfortunate.

It isn't in the war diary - ordinary soldiers are rarely mentioned in those - the casualty lists were published by the war office and picked up by national and/or local newspapers, including The Times. If you take out a free trial to The Genealogist you should be able to view them.
