Default Gideon Thomas HENLEY of Kingston, Surrey

    G'day everyone

Over the last couple of days I have started researching my g-g-grandfather, Gideon Thomas HENLEY, born January 1859 in Kingston, Surrey.

Very early days research-wise, but cannot find him on the 1871 census. He did not arrive in Australia until 1880 (per the John Elder). Just thought someone out there may have already discovered some info. He became a carpenter like his father, Thomas Gideon Henley (such imaginative names they gave their children back then!)

    Many thanks!

FamilySearch has a Gideon Henley born 1859 with birthplace Curbeton (?) as a boarder at St Margaret at Cliffe - any good? I can't find "Curbeton" so it may be a dodgy transcription.

It's a very badly written, and even more badly transcribed, Surbiton.
Surbiton is in Kingston registration district, the district in which Gideon's birth was registered.

    1871 census reference is RG10/1008, folio 56 page 12.

This did take some finding but does look promising - as transcribed on ancestry!

Thomas Gideon Henley, 29, bachelor, carpenter, married Mary Ann Swain, 31, widow, both living in Thames Ditton, on 4 April 1858 in Thames Ditton parish church.
Thomas' father was Thomas Henley, occupation builder.
Mary's father was Thomas George, coachman.

One of the witnesses was Rosa Henley, probably a sister of Thomas, and the source of the name of Gideon's younger sister in the 1861 census.

PR image available on FMP in the Surrey marriages dataset.

    Thanks for that! :-)
Yes, I found the same record the other day but at this point can't be 100% sure it's him. Definitely a transcription error (should be Surbiton). I don't know why he would be a boarder so far away from home at the age of 12 when his older brothers are all still at home. I think with a name like Gideon, I have to accept that the record is the one I'm after and figure out what on earth he was doing in Kent!
