I've been stuck on this for years so I'm hoping a fresh pair of eyes might help.
Theodore Percival Fothergill was born in 1865 in Islington, London. My grandmother called him Uncle Theo and said he was the black sheep of the family who had a bad start but everything turned out really well for him later. I know his parents, and where he was in the UK 1871 and 1881 censuses but then he disappears into thin air!
To save anyone wasting their time, this is a summary of the known facts so far and things I've ruled out: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Fothergill-215

I'm afraid I haven't found anything further on Theodore Fothergill but I was fascinated by the history of the Shaftesbury Training Ship. I'm sure you have seen it but there is a nice picture at https://www.thurrock-history.org.uk/adayingrays.htm
The National Archives catalogue (search for Shaftesbury Training Ship) gives quite a few hits for things like minute books etc. Could this one be of interest? https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ils/r/C7597984Sue Mackay

Many thanks for replying, Sue. I had seen that Thurrock History link before and found it fascinating as well! The author (Peter Benson) also wrote a book about the Shaftesbury called Where The Bad Boys Go which made me feel glad for Theo having that second chance and training.
The National Archives suggestion is a great one and I'll definitely look at that in more detail. Thank you!

Below is a link to the Victoria BMD site which has a few more details about the Thomas Fothergill who died in 1936.
It shows that whoever registered his death was unaware of his parents names, but that he was 72 years old, which would be about the right age.
Is it possible that Theodore changed his name to Thomas?

Trove newspaper
There are several articles on his death [by drowning] but they don't give anything up to help indicate if he is your fella or not. I was hoping one would at least suggest if he was married, then find a marriage for him, the marriage certificate if filled out correctly should state his parents names.

I don't think its Assistant Engravers Servant, its more likely to be Assistant ENGINEERS Servant. If you skip back a few pages you'll see 1st Engineer, 2nd Engineer etc.
The Captain of the RMS Orient was W Hewison, and it arrived at Adelaide on 7 Aug 1885, but also had passengers for Sydney & Melbourne.
Typically, it looks like the official crew lists for 1885 are missing, although there is a suggestion that they 'might' be at the National Maritime Museum: https://www.mun.ca/mha/holdings/view...icial_No=82254
ADDED: From the National Maritime Museum:
1861–1938
A 10% specimen group of crew agreements for each year, taken at random (every tenth box of papers) together with those for famous vessels (with some exceptions, such as those for the Cutty Sark and Great Britain), is in The National Archives. The remaining 90% for 1861, 1862, and years ending in '5', are held by the National Maritime Museum.

Thank you, Megan. Sadly, I keep getting an error message from that link but I hadn't used that website before so I've added it to my resource list! Although it's possible that Theodore changed his name to Thomas, there was also another Thomas Fothergill born here in 1864 so I'll just keep that on the Maybe List.
