Default John OWEN b c1853 Berks - Military

This man joined the Army as George MARTIN, so is "mis-filed" in WO 363 (WW1 Service Records). Unfortunately, there is no family information ...

John OWEN joined the Regiment of Foot (no. 1671) in November 1870, declaring age 17y 2m, born Burghfield, Berkshire. He was transferred to the Commissariat & Transport (ASC), Regt. No. 3291 and served until discharge 1877.

Address on discharge: Crowthorne, nr Wokingham, Berkshire

He's a bit long in the tooth for a WW1 record, isn't he?
I can't find a John Owen or George Martin in Crowthorne or in Wokingham in the 1881 census.

"WW1 Service Records" is Ancestry's name for the collection - the official title is WO 363. I've quoted it because if someone's trying to find the record I've highlighted, that's where they need to go. (And I think the page numbers will refer only to Ancestry's version.)

There are many records in there for men who never served in WW1 - several even died long before 1914.

Thanks for looking Lesley - I, too, came up with a blank.
