    Question Daniel McKain /Mesquene

    Hi,

I am reviewing some of my older research and have hit a bit of a curious point.

I have a John Alcock (1812-1876) who marries a Douglas Maria McKain (1817 - 1894). Her parents were William Henry McKain (1735-1837) who married Douglas Mary Dunsmore (1785 - 1873) (After William died, Douglas went to New Zealand, which is where a lot of the further research has come from!)
William's parents were apparently Daniel McKain (Or Mesquene) from Guernsey and Rachael Lihou.

I can find no details at all for Daniel McKain but I believe he was born and died in Castel, Guernsey, and I have him dying in 1808.

I have looked through Ancestry and Find my past, Genealogist and other BMD sources, but nothing at all.

The primary source i have for this information is https://www.glenside.org.nz/mckain-family-1849-1853.html and this is backed up (or provides a source for ) https://teara.govt.nz/en/biographies...n-douglas-mary
    And https://natlib.govt.nz/records/22380369

I have tried to find parish records for Guernsey but they seem to be held by https://www.priaulxlibrary.co.uk/ but it appears you cannot view the catalogue or any details.

Is anyone able to shed any light on Daniel? or can point me to any records that might confirm who he is?

    Thanks

    Dan

Oh Dan, there is a vast difference between not being able to view the catalogue or any details at all, and stuff not being online.

The Pridaux Library website says visitors are welcome.

    https://www.priaulxlibrary.co.uk/downloads

Family history page with a link to the catalogue at the bottom of the page.

Using family history records (12 pages of detailed information to keep you busy!)

If you can't get to the library itself then they offer a research service which, given the cost of travel and accommodation to Guernsey, is a steal at the price.
Scroll down the page for a paragraph about doing your own research.

Please don't moan about the cost of the research service. Back in the day when I began my family history almost the only way you could find out information was by going to the county record office/archive, and when the county is at least 160 miles away that means a lot of travel and either a lot of very short-day visits or a lot of overnight accommodation.

    Hi Pam,

Thanks for your reply. Don't get me wrong, I have the forms for getting the research done by the library staff, I have no problem paying for the research to be done, I was hoping that there might be something online that might help confirm whether Daniel McKain existed at all, maybe an index or something that could point me to the right place too.

The information I have at present is that he was born in 1759, and his father was also Daniel and was born in the 1730s.. however, there is a possibility that they are one and the same person.

I'm afraid all roads lead to Priaulx. Their catalogue covers -

    Hi,

I have managed to get something more for this family now. The Priaulx Library were helpful, but do not have many records for Daniel McKane.

He first appears in 1766 at the age of 7 along with a brother called John who was 11. There was 1 other person in the record (the Town Hospital records, which were found in the late 1980s or Early 1990s when it was closed) There is a reference to a Catherine, who people have assumed is their mother and supposedly from Cork in Ireland. Their father (from a marriage record for Daniel) is also Daniel, but it is believed that Daniel Senior died in or before 1766.

I was put in contact with an Alan McKane who has written up a history of the McCane's on the island.

    We have nothing before 1766.

I am guessing that Daniel senior would have been born around 1730 (give or take 5 years) Looking at the possibility that his wife, Catharine, was from Cork, he may have been of Irish descent, family maybe moved over after the McKanes were defeated in Scotland.

I am trying to find the Garrison Regiments of Guernsey between 1750 and 1766 to see if that can point me in the right direction. Failing that, Daniel Senior may have been crew on a privateer ship during the 7 year way (1756 - 1763) so maybe brought his family with him.

There is also the possibility he may have been Daniel Kane, Daniel Caine, Cain, McCaine, MacCain, and who knows how many other versions.

    Regards,

    Dan
