Both my wife and I have examples from our family history research of couples marrying each other in two separate Anglican churches in the same London parish within a week or two (one in the late 18th century and the other in the mid-19th century). Does anyone have any idea of why this was done? I could understand it if they were of separate faiths and married in churches dedicated to each one, but why twice in churches of the same denomination? Baffling!

Are you sure that the records are for marriages, or for banns? The banns had to be called at Both parishes if the happy couple were members of different churches.

If you provide the details, we'll let you know whether we're baffled.

Problem solved! Thank you, Lesley - your explanation makes perfect sense. Neither the wife nor I realised that banns were called in both churches if the bride and groom attended different ones!
