Default Why an additional name as an adult?

I have a baptismal record for a relative born in 1816. His surname listed is "BROWN". His first names listed are "John Henry Temple". No other first or last names are mentioned.

In records I have found of him as an adult though, he is listed as "John Henry Temple TORRENS Brown/e". I have no explanation of why the name "Torrens" suddenly shows up.

After the death of his father (Brown/e), I don't believe his mother remarried. So far, have seen no one with the name Torrens connected - what might be the possible reasons why this additional name suddenly shows up on records when he's an adult? Thanks for any ideas.

    For people wishing to help:

Deb is asking only why someone started using an additional name as an adult. She is not asking for information about the person. See the following threads for information already in the BG forum, and note that queries have also been posted in other forums.
