GREAT SYMPATHY is felt in Blackmore over the painfully sudden death of Bessie Maynard, the only daughter of Mr Herbert Maynard, foreman to Mr E marriage of Fingrith Hall. The deceased who was but 11 years old .... floral tributes from father, mother, and brothers; grandad, grandmother, auntie and Uncle Walter; Alice, Nell, Gertie and Uncles; grannie, Auntie Bessie and Uncle Fred...."

The GRO index site has the mother's maiden names. If the maiden name isn't given it usually meands it is an illegitimate birth.
I use FreeBMD to look for births and deaths first because it allows a search with wild cards and wider date settings then I use the GRO index to search for the likely entries I have found on FreeBMD. The GRO index only allows a date +/- 3 years either side and the gender must be entered. It isn't necessary to enter the registration district or the volume and page numbers. Some leeway is allowed with names by using the exact matches/phonetically similar variations/similar sounding variations box to the right of the name boxes but it is easier to look it up on FreeBMD first to get the exact spelling used if it is an unusual name.
You have to sign up to the site but it is free of charge to use.
