Thanks Pam,
What can I say.....? You have been an unbelievable help. And well done in piecing things together from my initial 2 posts! I have ordered a pdf copy of George's death cert and look forward to it arriving.
Coincidentally, I don't live far from south-east Surrey. It will be most satisfying to join the dots. I will let you know how I get on.

Depending in which direction from south-east Surrey you live we could be near-neighbours. (There's a nightmare thought for you. )
Yes, please come back and tell us what the death certificate says. We often get intrigued and far too involved with other people's family history when we should be concentrating on our own.

in my extended family tree I have several civilians who died in WW2 because of bombing, and they all have entries on the CWGC website (Commonwealth War Graves)
edit - sorry, I didn't read properly - your man wasn't a civilian

Not strange at all. Died in the UK, and buried in his home town. Which often happened.
Logistically it wasn't possible to return to the UK the bodies of all the people who died abroad, but it was possible with the smaller number who died away from their home town in the UK.
As well as service personnel the CWGC also includes civilians who died as a result of enemy action in the UK during WW2.

Hi Wimsey,
George was from Hyde and is remembered with a CWGC headstone in St. Mary's Newton, Hyde. And is also listed on a plaque inside the church.
I went up to visit and received some amazing help from the warden at St.Mary's who told me that George is buried in the same grave as 5 other family members (a very full plot!) but only George's headstone is present. This info helped to fill in a few blanks in my research. George was one of 11 siblings, eight of which died in infancy. And only one, my grandfather, of the other three who had children of their own. The other two, George and Robert died aged 33 and 19 respectively.
