    Post Brick wall literally

Hi I can not find any information on the 5 family members I’m looking for....!
I only have my grandfathers service number but when I type it in the search it says no record...? When I try and search my other grandfather it even worse as all we know is he was a pathfinder involved in a blue on blue over Belgium in 1944 and is buried there. But can’t find any information on here about him at all and it’s the same for my 3 uncles.. one was a captain and served in Burma and was a Japanese pow. My other uncle served in Egypt and was a kia as his name is on a list in one of our local churches but I don’t know which one and last but not least my other uncle was Italian and was a pow here in the Uk and after the war married my grandfather sister and stayed... I looking into their history as my 9 year old has a ww2 project to do for when the schools go back in September they have been tasked with finding out what their family members did during the war and what part they played. My grandfather died when I was 10 and my uncles died quite a few years ago. Would really like some help and advice please and thank you.

    Hello Pathfinder,

    Welcome to British-Genealogy.

I think you may have come to us via Forces War Records, and if so this will explain the connection.

Unfortunately you're not going to be able to find out that much before the schools go back in September because service records for UK personnel who served after 1922 are still held by the Ministry of Defence, and I would estimate that there is currently at least a six-month wait once you've sent in the application.

With each application you need to supply name, date of birth or service number, a copy of the death certificate and a cheque for thirty pounds. If you are not the direct next-of-kin and the person died within the last twenty-five years then you will receive only certain information. More details cam be found here.

However if you'd like to give us some names and any other information you have our sleuths may be able to find some facts for you.

Whilst as Pam says you will not be able to get their service records I can suggest a few sites that might help you to look for generalities or background.

    National Archives https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

    The Imperial War Museum https://www.iwm.org.uk

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission - here you can search for the details of those who died in War- https://www.cwgc.org

Burma Star Campaign https://www.burmastar.org.uk - whilst the site is primarily designed to support former personnel if you look on the front page you will see that there are links to descriptions of what the actually campaign consisted of.

Welcome to the British Genealogy Forum.
Pam is quite right. And as she says, we should be able to help using other records - for example, you mention at least two who died during the War and should be in the Commonwealth War Graves databases. However, to help you, we know who you are looking for. Names, certainly, but also anything you have on birthdates, marriages, deaths (during or after the War) etc. Anything that might make your guy stand out from a group of men with the same name(s).
