Default For jigsaw lovers - or people with spare time

For once I actually read a little bit of the weekly email from The National Archives (usually emails languish unread and unloved in my 'in' box for years) and my eye was caught by
"Archive jigsaw - 1908 textile design
This week's archive jigsaw is a textile design from 1908. It is part of a collection of textiles registered for copyright protection from 1839. The person registering the design had to provide a sample of the item - a similar process that still operates today."
I quite like doing jigsaws, and as I
have absolutely nothing else going on in my life at the moment , I clicked the link.
100 piece jigsaw, only took me 1 hour 28 mins. (There's a clock in the top right-hand corner of the page. )
Good job the kids have left home otherwise they would have thought I'd lost the plot when they heard me muttering 'knob on the top, hole on the left' as I tried to suss out which bit went where.

The one for the previous week looks as if it will send you cross-eyed as it's black and white.
"Wallpaper landmarks - In our next archive jigsaw, find the pieces to a beautiful wallpaper sample from 1844, showcasing landmarks of Paris such as the Notre Dame and L'Arc du Triumph. The wallpaper was registered for copyright by William Evans."

Seems as if I've deleted the one sent on 16 July, but this is the one sent on 9 July.
National Savings - Our latest online jigsaw is a poster promoting National Savings. The poster features a cartoon (a bit like Mr Bean) hiding his money around the house, from under a mattress or in a sock, to the more risky hiding places of the chimney or tea pot.

If anyone is interested in receiving weekly updates from TNA , scroll down to almost the bottom of this page where you'll see a link.

The recent jigsaw of a London underground poster was fun, I hadn't realised that you could click on an icon and see the finished picture. There is also a link to increase the number of pieces and to rotate them. It would also seem that you can upload your own jpg file and get it as a jigsaw on the screen.
Hours of fun for all the family as they say!
Shouldn't I be researching instead of doing jigsaws?

I thought the London Underground poster jigsaw was very appropriate in view of the recent hot weather.

It's good to relax the brain after doing your research.
Another alternative after researching is to do some housework, but that's boring, as well as never ending. With the jigsaw you see a finished result, and can have a sense of satisfaction. Especially if you note the time taken and do 'the most difficult yet' in less time than previous jigsaws.

Link to the underground posterjigsaw for people who are bored of doing housework.

If you want to while away the hours then try the latest jigsaw from the National Archives.
500 hundred pieces, but no picture so you can see what your final effort should look like.
Took me 5 hours 36 minutes and 26 seconds, though that did include some extra minutes because I forgot to turn off the clock.

    More jigsaws from TNA.
This one makes me smile because not only are there two women and only one man, but one of the women is shown riding one-handed! The poster is from 1900.

    Black-and-white freeze-frame of a horse's movement. (Terrible description, but you'll see what I mean.)

If you look at various pieces of the faces of Edward and George, you'll see how much Prince William looks like them.

Though if you want to perhaps spend your time more productively, you could check out The National Archives items on YouTube. https://www.

    Default Spare Time?

I love doing jig-saws and often get them from Charity Shops. However if you really do have spare time you can volunteer for FreeBMD. Sometimes it's tedious but mostly quite interesting and knowing that it is helping to complete resources for us genealogists makes it even more worthwhile.

A very valid point, Sue, about volunteering to index FreeBMD (or FreeCEN or FreeREG) if you have some spare time.
As you say, it can be tedious, though you can do it in short batches, but it's very worthwhile and you get a huge sense of achievement when you've finished a section. (I didn't transcribe for FreeBMD, but did twenty years of marriage in a particular church, and added a lot of postems to FreeBMD regarding anomalies in the PR to the GRO Index.)

    I wanna cry.

I bookmarked the links to most of the TNA jigsaws and spent many hours trying to improve my speed at completing them. Haven't done any of them for a while, but the other day I felt like doing a few.
DISASTER! The link to what is probably my favourite puzzle no longer works.
Was anyone else as sad as me and bookmarked some/all of the puzzles? If so, does your link to the black-and-white one of the basket weaver still work, and if it does, could you please post it?

    Hi Keith,

Yes, that's the site that The National Archives uploaded their puzzles to. What I need is a link to the specific puzzle I described because my original URL has got corrupted and no longer works.
