    Unhappy Sinner or Sailor

I cannot locate Charles Connerty in the 1851 and 1871 censuses yet he appears in the: 1841, 1861, 1881, 1891 records. His age in 1841 is given as 5 but his marriage and death certificates along with census returns place the birth date to around 1831-33. I wondered if he may have been in prison or the merchant navy as I have searched UK and Ireland records using various surnames forms. Does anybody have any details how I could access these archives?

    Hi rapidh32,

I have deleted your duplicate post regarding Charles because duplicate posts are not allowed on the forum. It causes confusion, with half of the information in replies posted in one thread, half in another, and another half
    being posted in both.

A brief look seems to reveal only one Charles Connerty born circa 1831-1833 in the 1881 census (I have yet to investigate the others) but for reference you do need to tell us at a minimum where people were born/living in the various censuses, and if you can give the census reference that's a big bonus. It ensures that we are looking at the same people that you're looking at.

The Charles I found in 1881 was born in Liverpool, living in the parish of Liverpool.
    Reference RG11/3632 folio 132 page 39.

If you don't understand about census references, then ask, and all will be explained.

This was from Ancestry.co.uk census record, so were census returns not completed from workhouse or similar institutions ?

The workhouse register,I found on Find My Past. The census was taken April 2nd 1871. The workhouse date was early May,couldn’t make out the exact date. He gives the same address as his wife was living at on the 1871 census. Couldn’t find him on the actual 1871 census itself.

Pamela W - that 1871 workhouse entry was a brilliant find.

Yes they were - see the 1891 census entry,
However, in some years patients/inmates/prisoners/etc were listed only by their initials, so it's almost impossible to find them. I did try to search for Liverpool workhouse in 1871 but without success. Have just had inspiration whilst typing. Went back several pages in the workhouse register where Charles was found in 1871 and checked for names of people who were admitted on or the day before census day.
One was a Jacob Husband, and he's in the Kirkdale Fever Hospioe of the pages related to the Liverpool Industrial Schools in Kirkdale, RG10/3829 folio 81 page 11, but not all of piece number 3829 is connected to similar institutions - there are 'normal' households included as well.

Charles' census reference for 1891 is RG12/2917 folio 73 pg 19.

He's admitted to the workhouse/hospital several times.

So is it feasible that Charles was in a workhouse when the 1851 census was taken and not as I originally thought prison/navy ?
    PS thanks for everyone's input.
