Default Soldiers in Ireland in early 19th Century

    Hi Folks,
Newbie here looking for some help. My GGG Grandfather Walter Glover was listed as a soldier at his daughter's wedding in 1848 (Links below). He is to be found earlier in Castletownbere where his son was born in 1822. I am trying to find out where Walter is from. There was an army base on Bere Island and I suspect he may have been stationed there. I have no idea where to start looking for any military records and would really appreciate some help. Where or where was Walter from ?? What was he doing in Castletownbere ??

Findmypast have some military records and I had a quick look there, but I could not see him, but I did find a Thomas Glover who was a private in the Somersetshire Light Infantry who was originally from Westmeath, so it is possible that he was Irish.

At the time Ireland was ruled directly from London, and troops were garrisoned there just as they would have been in any other part of the UK.

The National Archives has a vast array of research guides to assist people in their searches so there might be something there for you:

A very warm welcome to Brit-gen.
The Irishgenealogy transcript of Walter's son's baptism states record not yet imaged. It can be viewed on Catholic registers https://registers.nli.ie.
Do you have a baptismal year for Walter's daughter?

    Thanks Helachau,
Unfortunately I don't have birth record for Mary Glover. I just got an approximate DOB based on the marriage record above. I've gone through everything on the available records for the parish but no luck. The records are hit and miss I'm afraid as many did not survive.

How have you managed to identify Mary on the 1848 marriage as sister to the Walter bap 1822?

I had a search done by a professional genealogist several years ago. While I don't have a birth record for Mary, she felt that the time frame and the rarity of the name in Ireland linked them as siblings. They both have a father called Walter Glover, he's listed as a soldier on Mary's marriage cert and young Walter was born in a town with a huge military base. It's a bit of a shot in the dark I suppose but the lack of Irish state records makes it difficult to be certain.
