Hi everyone,
I am trying to track down some family history for my Grandfather, he has a diary in his possession of Mary Agnes Johnston who resided at Moray House in 1871 (I believe she had just starting her teaching diploma/course). So far I am unable to work out the names of her parents but I know she had an Aunt Alice and Aunt Martha.
There is reference to a very close friend throughout 'Jemima Jackson' who I would also like to know more about.
Thank you

Welcome to the Brit-Gen forums
Is the Moray House you refer to this one - The Moray House School of Education and Sport is a school within the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Science at the University of Edinburgh.

I did find this one in the 1881 Scotland census
48 Whitevale St
Registration district: Dennistoun, Civil Parish - Glasgow St John
Thomas I Johnston 30 Head, Grocer, born Glasgow
Mary A Johnston 26 sister. Teacher born Glasgow
James Johnston 20 brother, Grocer Glasgow
Bella Aitman 33 Servant Old Monkland, Lanarkshire
1871
95 Whitevale, Glasgow St John
Thomas I Johnston 20 Grocer
Mary A Johnston 16 Teacher
James Johnston 16 Scholar
Catherine Stewart 42 Servant Lochgilphead, Argyll
I don't have access to the original images only the transcript
1891 census
48 Whitevale St
Thomas N Johnston 40 Head grocer, Glasgow
Jeanie Johnston 36 Wife, Dryman, Stirlingshire
Agnes Johnston 8 daughter Glasgow
Mary Amy Johnston 37 sister, Teacher, Glasgow
James Johnston 30 Brother, Grocer, Glasgow
Agnes Campbell 56, Aunt, Buchanan, Stirlingshire
Mary Bultison 36 Cousin Buchanan, Stirlingshire
Minnie Sutherland 22 Domestic Servant, Glasgow
Thomas' middle initial is wrong as is Mary's middle name but this is a transcription and it is obviously the same family.
Whether this is 'your' Mary Ann though......

How sure are you that Mary's second name is Agnes?
I haven't been able to find a birth record for Mary Agnes but there is one for Mary Amy:
Mary Amy Johnson b. 29th July 1854 Glasgow. Parents James Johnson and Mary Inglis.
This may be the parents' marriage:
James Johnson m. Mary Inglis 8th March 1848 Glasgow.
This then may be the birth record of Mary Amy's brother Thomas:
Thomas Inglis Johnson b. 28th August 1850 Glasgow. Parents James Johnson and Mary Inglis.
These are all transcripts on Scotland's People. You can buy a few credits in order to view the original documents, which should provide you with additional information.

Hi Peter, I am trying to add the front page of the journal where she puts her middle names as Agnes

OK, back to the drawing board. I started to search for a Jemima Jackson 1854 +/- 5years and up popped this 1871 census. Again it is only the transcription but note that Mary Johnston is actually down as Mary Johnstone. I am giving the information exactly as it is in the transript so to see the original you may have to buy a few credits to Scotlandspeople

Still exploring possibilities
1861 Scotland census
Bouskied Cottage, Tenandry, Perthshire
William Johnston head 42 Land Steward born Berwickshire
Jane wife, 47 born Salesbury, Wiltshire
Mary Agnes daughter 8 born Kerry Ireland
Ann Douglas, Servant 19 born Moulin, Perthshire
So is it possible that Mary Agnes knew Jemima before they started training together?Sometimes paranoia is just having all the facts.
