    Default Eliza Cates

Can anyone help me find the Birth of a Great Grandmother. Her name was Eliza Cates. She was born 28th May 1875 in Marylebone London. Father Henry Cates and mother Anna Maria?i have no surname for Anna. For some reason she wasn't baptised until 1890. In 1897 she married William Charles Skinner. I'm trying to find her birth certificate to find out her mother's surname as i can't find the marriage between Henry and Anna. I had thought of looking for an Elizabeth but on both baptism and marriage certificate she is Eliza.
Would be grateful for any help.
    Thanks.

Have you ruled out the Eliza Ann Cates, birth registered June quarter 1876, Marylebone registration district?
    Mother's maiden name Brewer.

Sorry, think you can probably forget that one.
Found some earlier birth registrations with mmn Brewer - Amy Eleanor 1866, William Christopher 1868, and Eliza Louisa 1871, which seem to match a marriage of William Cates and Amy Brewer in 1865.

Have you found Eliza in the 1881 and 1891 census?

The 1890 baptism: Eliza's address is 3 Highworth Street.

1891 census of 3 Highworth Street:
    Henry Cates; Head; 50; Marylebone
    Hannah Cates; Wife; 51; Marylebone
    Dolly Cates; Daughter; 16; Marylebone
    Fanny Hayes*; Lodger, 18; Marylebone

    The 1897 marriage:
Witnesses were Richard Reeves & Fanny Reeves.

Richard Reeves married Fanny Hayes* in 1894.

    Could Dolly be Eliza?

I doubt if it matters but Eliza seems to have been a witness at Fanny Hayes' wedding but spelled her name "E. Kates"

There's a Hannah Eliza Cates birth registered in the September quarter 1875 in Marylebone, MMN Hannan per the GRO website. (Later than should be expected for a May birth, but sometimes people slipped up - my grandmother was registered 2 quarters after the one in which she was born.) Can't find a marriage for Cates to Hannan, though.

That's interesting because Eliza's husband William Charles Skinner had a child with an E Hayes
while still married to Eliza. I've taken her parents christian names from the Baptism.
Thanks for getting back to me.

Could be a dodgy transcription - FreeBMD has a marriage in the Dec Q 1868 of a Henry James Cates and there's an Elizabeth HANSON as a possible spouse.

Thank you for your information but i feel it must be an Anna Maria as that was on the baptism
    entry for Eliza Cates.
