Per online translations sites, "granatspl" appears to be short for Granatsplitter which means shrapnel.

About what I would have guessed. When I looked it up all I got were references to some sort of kitchen utensil.

No. I found him on FMP using their Military filter but I believe the source is icrc. The record gave his mother's home address, so I knew immediately I had found the right person.
