    Default Powell's of Manchester

    Hi,

I'm starting my journey to identify more information about my families history and specifically, my grandfather and his genealogy. Little is know about this side as my grandparents moved from the UK to Australia in the 1960s and I don't believe they kept in contact.

    What we know:

My grandfathers name was William Archibald Powell (01/01/1921). We believe he grew up in Manchester and that his fathers (my great grandfather) name was the same - William Archibald Powell.

We believe my Great Grandfather had something to do with a news paper in Manchester, possible the Manchester evening news?

My Grandfather married a welsh girl (my grandmother) in Wales in 1952.

That's actually all we know, and can't seem to find any other information about the Powells in Manchester. My request is very broad, and it's for any information or hints of where to look that may uncover more family history than we already have.

Any help or suggestions would be a great start!

    Glyn

    Welcome to the British-Genealogy forums

The only William Archibald Powell with a birth registered in the March 1/4 on FreeBMD is registered in Leicester with the mother's maiden name Morris.
As your grandfather's birthday is 1 Jan 1921 his birth had to be registered within 6 weeks of the birth and this is why I didn't golooking beyond the March 1/4.
Now knowing that that particular birth has the mother's maidn name Morris I used FreeBMD again to look for a Powell marriage to a ? Morris and found one for a William Archibald Powell to a Maud Mary Morris in the Aston Warwickshire registration district Sept 1/4 1907 vol 6d page 670. Maud Mary is entered twice, the second time with the surname Norris probably because the entry was difficult to read. You can use FreeBMD yourself. As it says it is free and you don't have to register. https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

I then searched FreeBMD for a birth of a William Archibald Powell from 1837 to 1900 any area (overkill on my part) and there was only one in December 1/4 1884 Droitwich Worcestershire reg dist vol 6c page 383
I then moved to the GRO index which is also free (google it) to look for this William's mother's maiden name (FreeBMD doesn't give them until 1911 onwards.

WILLIAM ARCHIBALD POWELL, mother's maiden name LAWRENCE
GRO Reference: 1884 D Quarter in DROITWICH Volume 06C Page 383

I will look for more whilst you digest this.

The 1939 Register (via Findmypast) has the family living at 116 Lansdowne Road, Manchester (now Old Lansdowne Road).

William A Powell Senior (dob 2nd October 1884) is a photo engraving operator
Maud M Powell (dob 14th August 1887) unpaid domestic duties
William A Powell Junior is a thread grinder in engineering
Elizabeth M Wilde* (dob 5th October 1934) under school age

*This has been transcribed as Nimp!
The transcription also lists another family who were actually living in 100 Lansdowne Road.

Elizabeth M Wilde b. 1934 New Forest D Qtr Vol 2B Page 982 mothers maiden name Powell.

There is a handwritten entry above Elizabeth's name which looks like Lamb.

    Elizabeth M Wilde m. George N Lamb 1954 Bradford J Qtr Vol 2B Page 183.
