Good evening all
I have Charles Barnard Grisby Royal Navy on a memorial to the fallen WW2 .
How ever I can not find any more details on him , the memorial is in Minster , Isle of Sheppey .
Can anyone shed some light on him?
many thanks
Dean

Hi Dean
I have been searching for quite a while and can find nothing on this man. I even tried the surname Grimsby - just in case - but zilch. Not on the CWGC site, not on FreeBMD or ScotlandsPeople. Doesn't show up in US, Canada, Australia etc.
Hopefully someone else will have more luck.

Were there any other Grisbys living in the area when the war ended? If so, they might provide a clue.
When I was researching for my OPS, I found that some men from both WW1 and WW2 had no actual link to the parish, but at some point since their enlistmen, their parents had moved into the area and wanted their children remembered near where they lived
Also, info on the memorials mostly came from the families, not the services - it was only when the child of a niece contacted me to explain that I discovered that an Abraham listed on the WW1 monument had served as William because he had hated the name...

morning All
sorry for the late response , I ran out of day light ! had to go to bed ….. thanks for your input , I think we are all reaching the same conclusion , re Lesley's question , there are no other families in the area.
A major clue is that Minster is on the isle of sheppey , kent and Sheerness was one of the biggest Naval dockyards during both world wars , so he could have come from anywhere and maybe had a 'girlfriend' in mister .
I will keep looking and let you know if I find him
thanks again

Is the memorial solely for WW2? Do you know when it was dedicated, because it might be worth getting hold of local newspapers of that time to see if it says anything about the people who are commemorated.
I did search the newspapers 1940-1949 on FMP to no avail, though obviously the smaller local newspapers are not as well represented as those for the bigger towns/cities.
There was a Grisby birth registration in Sheppey registration district in the 1970's; don't know if there's any connection.
Thought I'd check out probate records. No Grisby, but some Grisley, but nothing promising on FreeBMD for Charles Grisley.
Did also wonder if he might have been a civilian, as in quite a few places civilians have been recorded on war memorials for WW2.

see what you think ? its the surname that is now proving to be difficult .
Thanks
