Default James Howe - 36th Regiment of Foot

Have been told there is a record of James Howe born abt 1764 Stepney, Middlesex and enlisted 1785 aged 21 years and was discharged 1816 aged abt 52 years - 36th Regiment of Foot

Are there any more details available so I can confirm or dismiss this record as my James Howe

I don't have any details on James until his 1791 marriage to Phillippa Duppa Hancorn September 1791 Welwyn, Hertfordshire and then children born and located in Kent, then later located in Tower Hamlets, South Hackney

No idea why they married in Hertfordshire and the witnesses were not family

Any clues, ideas, suggestions welcome .......... Alison (Australia)

The 36th were in India 1782 - 1798 then back in the UK leaving 1800 and back UK 1806, leaving UK 1807 - back 1809, Portugal 1811, UK 1815, Malta 1817 and back to UK 1825. Does any of his children's births show oversea or match his time back in the UK?

This doesn't fit with his marriage 1791 and two children born about 1793 and 1797 so guess it is not him, thanks

The service record you want is on FindMyPast. You need to have a look at it before deciding whether it's the right one.

Although the regiments archive says the regiment was in India in 1791, I think a small number of men tended to get left behind. I'd be inclined to check the pay and muster records for 1791.

Note that the parish register describes them both as sojourners.

Are you sure there's nothing else you know about him? Birthplace?

He wasn't with the 36th in '91. From 20 Sep 1785 to 20 Sep 1792 he was with the 61st Regt.

    Birth parish - Stepney.

This is taken from the record I think you are referring to in post #1. Also found -

James Howe, Drummer, 2/36th Foot, enlistment 20 Nov 1791 (WO 25 ref 969)
James Howe, 1/36th Foot, enlistment 1793 (WO 25 ref 968)
James Howe, Private, 1/36th Foot (WO 25 ref 968)

His daughter Caroline Duppa Howe was baptised in Newington in 1811 and James was described as 'Gent' of Lockfields(?)

Mary Duppa Howe was baptised Limehouse 1813 (born 1808) and he was again described as a 'Gentleman' of Limehouse.

Thankyou - the marriage location has always been a mystery - why there? One theory is they eloped, the other was a quick wedding before he had to depart for some reason.
We know nothing of him prior to this - no birthplace, no parents, no date, no occupation - the few times he is mentioned in documents he is listed as a gentleman ............
