As Wimsey has said, Boots would have been his sickness insurance provider. The National Archives has much on the "Approved Society" system which you might want to explore after lockdown.

He was a porter in a chemist in 1911. By the time he enlisted in WW1, he was down as a 'packer'.

just been looking through the service record of a man in my family tree. He is asked "What is the name of your Approved Society?" to which his answer is "Prudential". His civilian job was for the railways.
