Default a Prerogative Court of Canterbury will

    Hi

I'm trying to decipher a name on the will of Thomas Summerfield, major 83rd Regiment, dated 26 February 1833, Limerick. It is available on Ancestry and free in National Archives.

I can read all the names except the first daughter.
It reads "... the children of my late oldest daughter Mrs Jane Anne COGALAN (??)".. Might not be Jane, might not be Anne, probably not Cogalan.

This daughter was unknown to me before now. The other names are

    "my wife Mrs Margaret Summerfield
    my daughter Mrs Mary Twynam
    my daughter Mrs Margaret Crofton
    my daughter Mrs Letitia Hilton
    my daughter Mrs Alexander Ward"

as this other daughter was "late", she obviously died before 1833. She could have married almost anywhere in the world since Major Summerfield travelled all over with the 83rd Regiment.

she must have been born Jane Anne (?) Summerfield/Somerfield between 1790 and 1797.

any help with this would be fantastic

edit - Thomas's surname in records is sometimes spelt SOMERFIELD or SOMERFEILD

should add that Thomas Summerfield married Margaret Duncan in Edinburgh in 1790 and his second daughter Mary Cecilia (Mrs Twynam) was born in Jamaica in 1797. So the "oldest daughter" must have been born 1790-7.

I think I've found the answer in a newspaper notice.

died 5 July 1823 aged 29 Jane Ann COGHLAN wife of John of the 69th Regiment, and "daughter of Major Summerfield, 83rd Regiment"

thanks to anyone who has been looking

thank you. I'm not sure it has got me very far.

John Coghlan married Jane Ann Summerfield in 1817 at the Cape of Good Hope. John was an army surgeon.
His service record is on Fold3, which luckily is currently free to look at.

    They had two children

    Thomas James Coghlan, born 1818
I/J Summerfield Coghlan (male or female?), born 1821/3

    both baptised Colombo, Ceylon

in 1828 John Coghlan (born Ireland 1792) re-married to Elizabeth Fitzgerald at a place I can't read.

can't work out what happened to either of the children, or Elizabeth, or when John died.

In 1834 John Coghlan transferred from 69th to 86th Regiment of Foot.
