Great great grandfather home schooling projec

Hi, my sons and I are doing home school research into their great great grand father William Rawlings service no. 24443. We have found 3 records about him in ww1. These include a very brief description of the events that earned him the gallantry medal. But it's only half the description, cut off half way through. I would like to find the rest of the description and is there any way to find more in general? Any advice greatly appreciated, Damian M

His service record does not appear to have survived. 60 per cent of such records were destroyed during the Blitz in WW2.

You could check out the National Archives site and see if they his regiments diaries.

From his(non-standard) card in the WW1 medal index, he was 24443 Pte W.J. Rawlings of the 10th Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry. I can't find the "normal" card with the standard medals that were issued after the war. Your sons might enjoy reserching the regiment if no other information on Pte Rawlings turns up.

The museum at Bodmin Keep has archives devoted to The Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry.

Whilst they do not have soldiers service records, which, in your case, seem not to have survived anyway, they do have battalion war diaries and enlistment records.

They are not open to visitors at the moment but they will take email enquiries.

On the website, select 'Research' and scroll down the page to 'Resources'.
