    His military record has a copy of his death certificate dated 1948, on which he is named as David Moar Scott.

    sorry I haven't got back sooner. None of these brilliant replies have turned up in my inbox. Fantastic detective work. Thank you very much.

    David Scott's divorce record on Ancestry says he was a sapper in the Royal Engineers and I guess he was at the Royal Engineers barracks, Chatham, at the time of his 1891 marriage. The marriage certificate (included in the divorce file) gives his occupation as "Sapper, R.E." and father David Scott "deceased" - ship's carpenter

    looks like David MacKenzie Bruce Scott (1847-87) also had a daughter Margaret Hamilton Scott, born 1884. Margaret's 1912 marriage is on Ancestry with father's occupation shipwright
