My 5x Great Grandfather is memorialized on a stone in the churchyard at Eyam. The date given for his death is October 3rd 1791. He does not appear in the burial register. Any suggestions? Thanks.

What is the actual wording on the stone?
Unless it says 'here lies buried' then the person is not necessarily buried in that grave.

It is a memorial stone and has a lot of family names. Mostly they are the Talbots and who they married. His two sons moved from Eyam. One to Stockport and one to Sheffield so there is a possibility he went there at some point.

Is it possible your great great grandfather died in the US but with his wife was memorialised in Eyam.
My great grandmother died in Australia but is named on a family memorial stone in Lancashire.
According to a public tree on ancestry
George Knowles
Born 2/06/1719 Shatton Derbyshire England
Marriage 4/04/1745 Peak Forest Derbyshire
Spouse Mary Talbot
Death 3/10/1791 USA

That is George Knowles, his birth, marriage etc but I am floored by the suggestion he went to the USA. This public tree of which you speak. Do you know who entered it? I am wondering if it is from my second cousin who got the wrong end of the story when another member of the family went to the USA and died there in the late 1800s can you elaborate on this record. Thanks Jen

The tree belongs to SueHighley but it is the transcription that gives place of death as the US while on the actual tree information it gives the date and the memorial information with a photo of same. There is also a public tree - owner Lois_Marrotte where the ancestry transcription says George died in the USA but on the actual tree info gives the memorial stone information. So this is a reminder to me to read the original and not rely on any site to be perfect.
Sorry to get your hopes up

Sue is my second cousin. Well! The search continues. I have seen the memorial inscription. Thanks anyway.
