This new thread is part of ongoing research in collaboration with a distant cousin into Isaac Levy c 1781 who may have married Abigail last name unknown. This line links to the marriage in 1850 of John Levy son of Isaac to Hannah Crawcour- Synagogue Scribes Marriages GSMa 112/12 Hannah CRAWCOUR ( Hebrew name Hendela)father's Hebrew name Aharon - 10 November 1850- John Levy father's Hebrew name Isaac Ha Levi.

The 1841 Census usually ( but not always consistent) rounded down by 5 years after 15 years of age so the above ages may not be accurate dob.
The questions arise are:
1 Are the above the children of Isaac Levy?
2 Is Abigail the wife of Isaac?
3 Are there 2 separate families recorded given the difference in ages of the above?

The 1841 Census does not record family relationships and there are numbers of Ancestry family trees which record the death of Abigail Levy in 1843.
Further research shows that there was an Abigail Levy who died in 1843 and my distant cousin holds a copy of her GRO Death Certificate. The certificate records her husband as Mordecai Levy not Isaac. There are several newspaper articles which record the death of Abigail Levy including her inquest. Bells Weekly Messenger Sat 7 Jan 1843 records that Abigail Levy aged 74 wife of Mordecai Levy 2 Goodwins Buildings Wentworth Street died in a fire.

This data suggests that Abigail Levy who is recorded with Isaac Levy in 1841 is a different person to the one who died in 1843. It is likely that Abigail Levy who died in 1843 is:

Abigail Levy father's Hebrew name Leibel Beker married Mordecai Levy father's Hebrew name Aharon Levy 26 August 1806.

It is possible that the GRO Death Index record for an Abigail Levy Dec qtr 1858 Whitechapel 1c 273 maybe the same person who appears in the 1841 Census with Isaac. In addition, there are several GRO Death Index Records for an Isaac Levy between 1841-1850. Copies of these records are needed to confirm relationships and ages.

The 1851 Anglo Jewry Data base - JewishGen UK Data bases records 2 possible children of Isaac Levy. Jane Levy ID 6017 father Isaac but mother not named. She is recorded as marrying Hyam Hyams Gt Synagogue 5 Sept 1847.

There is also Samuel Levy ID11276 father Isaac mother not listed married Julia Isaacs 30 Oct 1858.

Many thanks Alma for the information on Abigail Levy died 1858. Is there any other ages for Isaac Levy died between 1841-51 and for Abigail Levy same period or later?

Any thoughts on whether or not there are 2 families of Levy in the 1841 Census welcome. My thoughts are that the older Levy are the children of Isaac but not the younger ones. In addition, the wife was usually recorded below the husband but not consistently and if so, is Abigail the wife of Isaac?

There is another issue- in the 1851 Anglo Jewry Census on JewishGen UK Data bases it is very difficult to identify any of the Levy recorded in the 1841 Census as having a father named Isaac- I have posted a couple of the names but can't currently locate others. Petra Laidlaw who wrote the data base did not put any names of individuals who had died pre 1851 except for the names of parents if known but no other data.

In the case of the two Levy she recorded in 1851 there is no mother named which suggests Petra did not have data on the wife of Isaac Levy such as a Synagogue Marriage record.

Any comments on the above welcome.

I haven't found a likely one for Abigail, there's one in Hendon about the right age but unless she was staying with someone there it's unlikely.

Thank you Alma. Currently, I am trying to trace the individuals recorded in the Isaac Levy 1841 Census household. My distant Crawcour cousin has a marriage certificate for Samuel Levy who married Julia Isaacs in 1850. However, the name John deceased and not Isaac is recorded as the father of Samuel and Julia is a minor. The address is 1 Wentworth Street Spitalfields. I have yet to see a copy of the marriage so can't comment on the accuracy of data.

The following census data refers to Samuel Levy=Julia Isaacs. I can't locate the couple in the 1851 Census so any help tracing them would be appreciated. Petra Laidlaw in the 1851 Anglo Jews data base has them at 1 Cook's Buildings HO 107 1524 017 but I can't see them on Ancestry but may well have overlooked them.

In the case of John Levy who married Hannah Crawcour The Jewish Chronicle has DEATH 26.8.1866 after a long and protracted illness, MRS HANNAH LEVY, youngest daughter of the late Henry CRAWCOUR, aged 37....

Phillip, some enumerators did list first the males in the household followed by the females and this seems to be the case here. Usually, though the people are listed in age order which isn't the case here. Difficult to know whether Abigail is Isaac's wife.

Henry is age 11, not 4.

I lean towards two different families.
