Default Aston and Tighe to NZ

    Hello

I live in NZ and I am researching the following family. Aston, Tighe,

In particular on my father's side I start with - Clyde ASTON and Gladys TIGHE

Before coming to New Zealand they came from:

ASTON family come from Surrey, UK.

    TIGHE from NSW, Australia.

    Thanks Rose.

First, a very warm welcome to Brit-gen.
I note a separate thread has already produced results re. McAneney.

    London Gazette https://thegazette.co.uk/all-notices

Put "gladys tighe" (include the " " as part of search key) in Text search and hit Update results. 1 hit returned - click on The London Gazette, Issue 31206 ... - see col 2. Tab back page by page to 2864 to determine reason listed.

Repeat search with key "g tighe"

    Good luck with the search

Thank you for the welcome. The information in the London Gazette for Gladys Tighe in regards to the UK Airforce is great. Gladys did join up with the UK Airforce during WW1.

Yes you have the right Gladys, she and Clyde are my grandparents.
I have a bit on both the Tighe and Aston families. There was a Tighe reunion some years ago and I have a copy of a booklet they had for the reunion.
Have recently tracked down Rosa Eleanor, her maiden name is Maskell, from Bothwell, Tasmania (her father being an ex-convict).
When you say 'do you have all the Australian stuff' I'm not sure what you are able to find.
Gladys has only one sister, Norah Atkinson. I wonder if you able to give me any school details?
The story is that Arthur, Rosa, Gladys and Norah lived rather well, servants and carriages, the girls being privately schooled, however Arthur often ran out of money and they would move in with his parents until they became financial again.

So now we know his parents first names - if the informant had the correct information.

Wow this family get more interesting by the minute. Atkinson was baptised in Corfu Greece 1827 by the RC priest to the British garrison even though the family were C of E.
No, I was not clever enough to find this myself but did find it on a public tree on ancestry. There is actually a letter written by the priest and giving the names of the parents - Robert Tighe and Sarah McNamara with Atkinson's full name written out. Also witnesses and the father's names of Robert and Sarah. Thomas Tighe and John McNamara. Even has the father's names of the witnesses.

If we weren't in lockdown I would say see if your local library has the free version of ancestry.com but ... however ancestry does offer a free 14 day trial if you want to try that but do make sure you tick the unsubscribe block a couple of days before the 14 days run out or your bank account will suffer a big hit.

Yes I'm pretty sure that Tighe's Hill comes from the family.
Atkinson A P Tighe was a premier at some stage for, I think NSW.
The names you have sound familiar but I didn't know the details you have given me, thanks.

After Arthur died Rosa remarried a widow, Dr Purdy, here in NZ. He had four or five children and Rosa had the two girls. One of his girls married an ASTON, Gladys married an ASTON (same family) and Norah married one of the Purdy boys. Norah, one of Dr Purdy's daughters and Rosa all became widows. Norah returned to Australia and remarries, Rosa returned to Australia and Dr Purdy's daughter remarried and stayed in NZ.
So that took a bit to sort out, made it interesting though.

    Hi
No Atkinson Alfred Tighe wasn't a Premier of NSW but was an MP for the Northumberland district (around Newcastle)
Here is the official NSW parliament site giving his details and when he served.
