Hi Everyone, was thinking what if James wasn't born Hereford ! So looked on GRO and found these 2 for 1882

    ROBERTS, JAMES ARTHUR RENSHAW
GRO Reference: 1882 J Quarter in ALTRINCHAM Volume 08A Page 202
    ROBERTS, JAMES ARTHUR MELLOR
GRO Reference: 1882 S Quarter in CHEADLE Volume 06B Page 333

Also I've found a marriage for a James Roberts and a Renshaw in 1882 could these be our James mother and father?

    Name: James Roberts
    Gender: Male
    Age: 25
    Birth Date: 1857
    Marriage Date: 1882
Marriage Place: St. Anne'S, Sale, Cheshire, England
    Father: James Roberts
    Spouse: Ann Renshaw
    FHL Film Number: 1656554
    Reference ID: 2:3G1H4T3

And too make things worse we now have a 3rd James Roberts if this is our gang! Our James grandfather looks like a James too! Any suggestions ? Thanks

Don't quite know why I read this post a second time, but good job I did.

Have you made a typo regarding James' second name, or are we looking for a James Arthur, and not a James Alfred, as per the title of this thread and as named in the first post?

Can you also please confirm you have the correct name for James' father?

Hi Toffeetower, I have doubts that James Robert's and Ann Renshaw are the parents of 'your' James. They are on the 1901 census RG13; Piece: 3325; Folio: 53; Page: 33

    James Roberts 40, gardener,
    Annie Roberts 36
    James Roberts 18
    Ernest Roberts 17
    Samuel Roberts 15
    Fred Roberts 10

And James the younger is here in 1911, RG14; Piece: 21567; 6 Kelsall Street Springfield Sale, Cheshire.

James Arthur Roberts 28, gardener, Sale.
    Edith Roberts 27
    Neville Roberts 4
    Frederick Roberts 3
    Dorothy Roberts 2
    Marjorie Roberts 1/12

So, I think we can eliminate him from the search.

Hi Pam, James jnr who married Alice Lucas has his name as James Alfred Roberts on his son Alberts marriage cert, but on Alberts birth he has it as James Arthur Roberts like on his own marrige cert to Alice so not sure what that is all about? Also James jnr father is also called James Arthur Roberts according to the marriage cert for James and Alice ! Hahahah this make sense? Thanks

Toffeetower, I've searched census records looking for a James with a father James and there's a fair few but none with a James senior who was a clerk. As you mentioned earlier a family member thought there had been a name change at some point possibly to Farrell or O'Farrell I also looked under both of those surnames but didn't find anyone who jumped out at me. I also searched for James Roberts, clerk 1851 +/-10yrs which can be done on The Genealogist site I didn't find one who had a son James about the right age or who fitted with what you know about him.

I don't know where we go from here, the difficulty is not knowing where he was born or if he told the full truth on his marriage certificate.

I meant to ask, what are the names of the witnesses on James Arthur Roberts and Alice Laura Lucas' marriage certificate?
