Thanks so much everyone
My 2 interests (as well as entertaining you which I enjoyed) are
Robert Pirrie the father of Ellen Pirrie.
AND
George Merewether’s medical Records
Robert Pirrie first
Poor g.grandmother Ellen has no history.
Who was Ellen Pirrie?
She died of pernicious anaemia 9 montha after her husband PS Merewether alias Charles Murray died of sunstroke in Australia.
She died in Westland Hospital Hokitika NZ where here daughter would have been able to visit and sit with her.
Her Hokitika daughter was Emma Shannon.
My grandma Emma would have been holding her new baby Ernest in her arms.
Ellen’s first grandchild.
Would that have helped the lady confused from lack of red cells and oxygen.
I hope so.
Ellen Pirrie was born in Malta at the Garrison and when she was 3 yrs old her parents sailed away with her and her new babu sister Jane.
They were on the ship ‘The Boyn’ with 356 men,24 women, and 35 children
the 77th Regiment were on the way to Corfu.
I admit I know nothing about The Crimea War.
I know nothing more about g.grandmother either.
until she marries Sid when her oldest boy was 22yrs and signs with a cross which tells me she was illiterate.
There is another clue when on the birth record of her second son Charles Murray she says her fathers name was Robert
It was
Robert Pirrie
Thanks to forces war records I have him in Chatham sick as I detailed previously.
I have no DOB so I do not know how to find what became of him.
Or Ellen, her sister, and her mother.
I think the 77th got diverted to India to help with the ‘Mutiny’
Ellen cannot read or write
Lucky she found our Sid.
Secondly
How do I search for George records of six weeks unconscious at the Mutiny and afterward affected by his exposure to the sun?
humbly yours
Bev

Robert Pirrie transferred from the 77th to the 29th Regiment Of Foot on 1 June 1861. His service No. is recorded as 901 and his discharge papers are on FindmyPast if you have access.
He attested in Jamaica in October 1845, aged 14 years and 2 months & was discharged by the regimental board in Newcastle, Jamaica in August 1870 after 21 years service, although he served a further 168 days until 7th Feb 1871 (discharged at Halifax, Nova Scotia).
As well as being in the 1861 returns for Chatham under No. 1855 with the 77th, he is also recorded in Aldershot under No. 901 with the 29th
His service is summarised in the discharge document, and his pensionable service only counts from 22 Aug 1849 as he was under age before that. His intended place of residence after discharge was Toronto, Canada.
ADDED: His address in 1906 was Old Fort, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Just realised that you said you had no DoB for him. His army papers say he was born Wigan, Lancaster (Lancashire)c1831, but he is on the 1861 census at the invalid depot as aged 25 (c1836)- RG9 Piece 480 Folio 144 Page 9
I would think that the discharge document is more accurate, which seems to be confirmed by the 1851 census in St Woollos, Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales, where he is a 19 year old bandsman with the 77th regiment - HO107 Piece 2452 Folio 608 Page 21

I suspect that the daughter was simply acting with the written authority of her mother, ie acting with power of attorney rather than being a legally qualified person. Attorney isnt a term used in the UK to describe a solicitor etc.
More recent, but along the same lines: https://www.gov.uk/lasting-power-attorney-duties

There's lots of 'half-information' floating around this thread, e.g. an age but no year, a death but no age, a name and relationship but nothing to confirm it, so let's start getting some fuller details.
Starting with 'brother George'.
Assuming he is the George Lane Cockburn, aged 74, whose death was registered in Brighton registration district December quarter 1910, he can be found in the 1901 census living in Guildford.
Census reference RG12/604 folio 77 page 3
Geo. C. L. Merewether, 64, Col Royal Engineers ret'd, born Hereford.
Maria E. P. wife, 48, born india
Fast backwards to 1841, census reference HO107/433/3 folio 27 page 9
Living in Cathedral Close, Hereford.
Marina Merewether, 35,
Addalina, 16,
Marina, 15,
William, 13,
Charles, 10,
Sidney, 8,
George, 4
Only Sidney and George born in county.
That 1851 census reference helachau found has some of the family living in Melcombe Regis, Weymouth.
Mary Ann Merewether, widow, 47, Salisbury, Wilts
Mary Ann, daur, 24, Hampton, Middlesex
Philip, son, 18, Hereford
Edward R, son, 9, Hereford
Emily, daur, 7, Hereford
The baptism says Philip's parents are John and Mary Anne. There are also baptisms for George Lane Cockburne Merewether in 1836 and Edward Thomas Rostand in 1842 with the same parents; all in Hereford though no actual church specified.
I know this information flitters around a bit, but I don't think there is a logical way to post it, as it is very 'bitty'.
Marriage 31 May 1869 at St Pauls in the parish of St Pancras. (PR available on Ancestry, London marriages.)
Edward Thomas Rowland Merewether, full, age, bachelor, architect, to Fanny Murrell.
Edward's father is described as John Merewether, Dean of Hereford.
The Clergy database https://theclergydatabase.org.uk/jsp/search/index.jsp
says John Merewether was a curate at Hampton in 1823, and Dean at Hereford in 1832.
Edward, born Hereford, in 1871 is living in Lambeth with Fanny, son Alworth, and his mother-in-law. Reference RG10/687 folio 8 page 8.
Death registration for Edward Thomas Rowland Merewether, aged 68, March quarter 1910 Brighton registration district.
Geo Lane Merewether in 1851, aged 14, born Hereford, is a pupil living in Marlborough. Possibly at Marlborough College, though it doesn't actually say so. HO107/1838 folio 252 page 20
By pure fluke, have just found mother Mary Ann and daughter Emily in 1871. Living in Kensington. RG10/50 folio 39 page 70. INdexed on FMP as Merewather.
That would fit a death registration I'd already found for a Mary Anne Merewether, aged 75, Kensington registration district September quarter 1879.
The two major questions still to be answered are what year is this?
Ellen Pirrie was born in Malta at the Garrison and when she was 3 yrs old her parents sailed away with her and her new babu sister Jane.

On the marriage certificate 1887 her father is named as Robert Pirrie, Soldier. mother Ellen Pirrie formerly Brown.
Philip S is a miner age 54 and Helen Pirrie is a spinster age 43. Daniel O'Brien and James Simpson of Hokitika, both labourers are the witnesses.
So if she left Malta when she was 3 years old it would have been around 1841.

Pam,
Everything you found is correct and already known to me.
Thank you.
I collect it on ancestry.com.
My style of engaging with the forum must have a description and you may feel free to call it something polite.
‘Conversational' perhaps. Not that of a trained academic.
My approach is to catch your interest.
