    Default Alias all his Life

    Philip Sidney Merewether
    Philip Sidney Jarrett Merewether (P.S.J.M.)
    alias Charles Murray

The tree seems to be short on information between 1851 and the 1880’s, but there is an interesting notice in the NSW Police Gazette 18 Apr 1861, as follows:
“Information is requested respecting Philip Sydney Garrett Mereweather who, when last heard of, was mining at Fryer’s Creek in 1853”

I wonder who was looking for him!
    https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/a...le%2F252045844

So he was known as Merewether when he first arrived in NZ and when he was mining in Victoria, but by the time of the children’s births back in NZ was using Murray, although I can only find registrations for Mary Anne in 1869 and Charles in 1872.
    Jomot1
I hope you are all well at home.

I have been reviewing your valuable post please refer to QUOTE above.

‘Jarrett' was a name (P.S.J.M) Sidney dropped on his marriage Certificate and on his Will.
I do have evidence he was given this name at his christening.

The evidence is(a photocopy) of a letter written in 1848 regarding the authenticity of a man called Charles Landon Wetherell Merewether and it states it is from his Aunt the widow of Rev Robert Merewether.

Charles L. W. Merewether was the ‘rascal' brother of P.S.J.Merewether. But we are not exactly discussing him on this post.
But this family is always about 'all of them' because together they have answers as to why my g.grandfather lived under an alias.

    Charles L.W.Merewether 1830-1895
born in London sponsors married in Aust 1861
Unknown when he moved to Australia.

The document authenticates Charles as the godson of Aunt and widow of his godfather the Revd Robert Wetherell.

The document also names (P.S.J.M) christened in Hereford Cathedral June 7th 1833
    Sponsors
Sir Philip Sidney now Baron De Lisle of Penhurst Kent
    William Wightman Esq
    Ben...Law ...
Sir William, one of the Judor of Wo... Place london and mrs Jarrett of Princeton House... etc ect.

I wonder what will happen next?
I am about to chase up Fryerstown in N.S.W which was called Fryers Creek.
I found a book on Amazon which describes Fryerstown in Victoria New South Wales like a desirable getaway with preservation of goldrush cottages and a Mechanic’s Institute.
If our (P.S.J.M) has been in a brush with the law we might find out about it here.
I think I read they are still searching for gold there.
His future wife Ellen may be with him.

Have you any tips of where I could start a search.
    Perhaps a historical society?

Googling around there is a suggestion that Fryerstown was formerly Fryer's Forest, and that Fryer's Creek was later known as Vaughan: https://www.egold.net.au/biogs/EG00250b.htm

It looks like Castlemaine Historical Society may be your best bet:

    Dear Forum,

Bev Olson belonging to 'Alias all his life'
    I am back.

My family and I have been connecting and my nephew has put together a timeline from 'NZ Papers Past' mostly.
    Thanks for your wonderful prompts.
I am indebted to the forum for information about the man who lived in NZ under an 'alias all his life.'
    My ggrandfather.

As part of understanding 'him' I now know more about his wife. I have learned about his British soldier, brother in India who at a young age participated in the retaliation against The Indian Rebellion, or 'the Mutiny' depending on your point of view.
Post Traumatic Stress +++ for brother George L.C.Merewether.(see previous correspondence please.

Thanks to the Forum's initial prompt I have a timeline to present to you about the long lost first son of Dean Merewether and Brother of my ggrandfather Philip Sidney Jarrett Merewether (Alias Charles Murray)

    I want more.
Where did first son John Francis Merewether die?
Born 17th August at 1/2 past 2 Privately baptised on the 26th October Christened in Hampton Church by Rev W.P. .....? 31st Oct 1823
Sponsors Rev Francis Baker (Bevs note His Uncle) by proxy John F Worth, Mrs Merewether his Aunt (Bev's note became wife of Samuel Sebastian Wesley) Francis Merewether (Bev's note his Uncle Rev Francis Merewether brother of the to become Dean Merewether of Hereford Cathedral- Baby John's father)

    My hunch is this:-
John F Merewether after returning to England from NZ went to work for John Henry Newman at his Oratory School in Cotton Staffordshire.
    Pure speculation.
    Why?

Because there is a Merewether mentioned in Chaplain John Newman's (Now a RC saint) diaries Oxford Uni 1841 on Google
John recieved an MSS from his chaplain Newman in July 1841. It was days away from the publication / release of extremely controversial Tracts. Tracts which upset Anglicans including John F Merewether's father Dean Merewether.

Also W A Pugin the architect mentions him popping in to see Pugin's benefactor in Italy Earl of Shrewsbury.
(Talbot.) John borrowed money to go to Rome and train as a priest according to Pugin.
see google The Collected Letters of A.W.N. Pugin 1851-1852 search for Pugin Mereweather

I have found a rate book in Birmingham England 1831-1913
    Merweather John (note spelling)

I will see if I can find it again in more detail for you.

Regarding the beautiful PDF Timeline of John Francis Merewether to follow, how do I send it to you?
feel free to use my email
