The record I found was an Emma Johnson - baptised at St Michael's/Ashton-under-lyne born to a John Johnson and Martha. I found 3 other children, Benjamin, Eliza and Nathaniel, born to the same couple but no Elizabeth.
So I am still no further on solving this puzzle.

The birth I found for an Emma Johnson, father John, mother Martha was at St Michaels Church, Ashton - under -Lyne, Lancashire. There were other children born to this couple near to Emma's birth but not an Elizabeth. So I still have no proof that Emma and Elizabeth share the same father.

I have now followed the births of children to John and Elizabeth Hewitt, and yes the mother's maiden name is Johnson for all children.
It would seem to be too much of a coincidence that her maiden name is Johnson and she is not related!
On the 1841 census , it indicates a birthplace for Elizabeth Hewitt in another county. On the 1851census it shows Elizabeth's birthplace as Sutton, Cheshire.
I can't find this birth so far.
I've also looked through a list of deaths for a John Johnson to fit the age and year but none seem to fit.

    Any suggestions still welcome!

    Hello
FS have a marriage in 1803 in Sutton of a John Johnson and a Judith Taylor. Also a baptism in 1778 of John Johnson in Sutton.
There is a death in 1864 of an 86 year old Judith Johnson in Macclesfield reg dist which includes Sutton.
    Could be worth checking.
Edit Yes FS have the 1864 burial of Judith Johnson in Sutton

From FS this Judith may have left a will though, probate to Ralph Johnson. So not necessarily your family as your John was a carter.

This John was a husbandman at marriage, not a carter.

I've been trying to trace Elizabeth Hewitt nee Johnson to see if there are any further links, and I think I may have found her birth. If I'm correct, then she is possibly Emma's cousin rather than sister.

The 1861 census for John & Elizabeth Hewitt has them in Boughton, Cheshire. Elizabeth is 50 & born Neston, Cheshire. They have a 4-year-old grandson with them named James Johnson, born Chester St John, Cheshire.

In 1871 Elizabeth is at the same address but is now aged 60, a widow and born Liverpool.
Elizabeth Hewitt 60 widow b Liverpool
John 18 Son Engine Cleaner b Liverpool
James 14 Grandson b Chester (presumably the James Johnson from 1861)
Joseph 21 Nephew Fireman Locomotive b Liverpool. Lost 1 foot.
Elizabeth Willcock 26 Daughter b Liverpool
William Willcock 6 grandson b Crewe
    Elizabeth Willcock g/daur 3 b Chester

1881 3 Cross Street, Boughton, Cheshire
    Elizabeth Hewitt 70 Widow b ?? Cheshire
Alfred Batchelor 22 Grandson b Chester Loco Engine Cleaner
Robert Batchelor 17 Grandson b Tranmere Loco Engine Cleaner
Thomas 15 Grandson b Chester Loco Engine Cleaner
    John 13 Grandson b Chester
(sons of Sarah Ann Hewitt, who married Robert Batchelor in 1858)

    1891 Boughton Chester
Jonah Bennett 30 Engineman b Chester
    Elizabeth wife 23 b Chester
    Lydia 5
    Samuel 3
    William H 1
Elizabeth Hewitt 80 Grandmother b Capenhurst, Cheshire. Living off own means
John Bachelor 21 Lodger b Chester
(Elizabeth Bennett is Elizabeth Willcock from the 1871 census)

Death: HEWITT, ELIZABETH aged 81 GRO Ref: 1891 D Quarter in CHESTER Volume 08A Page 255

There is a baptism at Shotwick, Cheshire 25 Nov 1810, Elizabeth d/o Henry & Emma Johnson of Shotwick. Surrounding entries include Capenhurst.

Henry & Emma married 5 Nov 1810 in Shotwick, but baptised their subsequent children in Liverpool, including an Emma in 1818, another Emma in 1825 and a John in 1820.

Henry was baptised Shotwick 26 Feb 1788 to parents James & Elizabeth Johnson. They also baptised a son named John - 9 Oct 1792.

Following on from Garstonite's possible marriage, there is a further marriage in 1850 at St Nicholas:
Adam Lowe full age widower labourer of Ray Street. Father = Adam Lowe, Labourer
Ellen Johnson f/a widow Ray Street. Father = Richard Dutton, Labourer
Wits: Henry Pedder & Ellen Abraham
    All signed X

They are possibly in Burscough in 1851, Ellen aged 49 born Lathom, Lancs.
There is an Ellen Dutton d/o Richard & Margaret of Lathom baptised 4 Apr 1802 at Ormskirk
