I am trying to find information on my wife's Grandad Herbert Cross of the RASC, he fought in the desert in WW2 but we know very little else. We have his medals (he threw them in the bin when they arrived, but nan rescued them). We have a number of photos with information, but I am struggling to upload them. I have put them on imgur, but still seem to have no success.

Herbert Cross WW2 post 2
I am trying to find information on my wife's Grandad Herbert Cross of the RASC, he fought in the desert in WW2 but we know very little else. We have his medals (he threw them in the bin when they arrived but luckily nan rescued them). I am going to send for his service record and will probably visit Kew to see the company war diary. Just wondered if anybody has any other ideas.
I now know how to post the pictures, sorry to duplicate my post so if somebody would delete the post I would appreciate it.

Hello Adycart,
Welcome to British-Genealogy.
Service records for personnel who served after 1921 are still held by the Ministry of Defence. Details of how to apply, along with links to the relevant forms which you have to send, can be found at https://www.british-genealogy.com/fo...-WW2-amp-after
It will cost thirty pounds and you will also need to send a photocopy of Herbert's death certificate. If you don't have/can't obtain a copy from other family members , then you can get another one from the GRO. https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
The records will probably take two or three months to arrive.
ADDED: Post with images finally moved to correct thread. (Mad panic when I realised that I had moved them to a completely unconnected one!!)
Anything more you want to say about Herbert, please post in this thread. Do not start another one.

Hi
Looking at his medal slip, he only served in North Africa - hence the Africa Star
Read about the requirements for them all on here - https://www.gov.uk/guidance/medals-c...nd-eligibility - click on WW2 medals to see the list.
This is the references you will need to see the war diaries -
https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ro=any&_st=adv
Look at the 1st 3, but wait until you get his service records, in case he was transferred to another unit.

Herbert Cross RASC
I joined this group forgetting that I had posted before. For completeness I applied for the Service records for Herbert Cross, and then Covid hit, the cheque wasn't cashed and to be honest I gave up on it.Then I received a letter of apology with the records and a request to rewrite the cheque as the previous one had expired. Anyway, here is the record, I was surprised by the length of time spent in hospital. There are other records too, if anybody would like to see any let me know and I will upload.[IMG][https://imgur.com/ZjijR3G][/IMG]

Thank you for getting back to us to let us know that the staff at the MoD despite being under a great deal of pressure were on the case.
