May I just add a general comment to the question "Is searching Jones helpless?"
From my experience with family names Edwards, Roberts and Jones it is a question of patience and perseverance. I have developed a strategy of getting the most recent verfied information and then working back generation by generation. And even then doubting my findings.
It can be costly and seemingly frustrating and insurmountable to find the solution at times, but even if it takes months / perhaps years to get back to the end of civil registration and into parish registers, at the end of the day / year/ decade of my research there is a feeling that I MAY have solved the problem.
So to repeat - patience and perseverance - ev.n with a surname that isn't very common, ie my TUSON surname,
Off to do the dishes now as it is my turn to tidy the kitchen after cooking dinner
