    Default Francis Richard Rixon

    Hello,

A bit complicated here but I am a bit stuck with the birth of my grandfather Francis Richard Rixon.

His father Fred Rixon born 1863 Tisbury 5a 219 married Cecily Ellen Hibberd Tisbury 5a 314 in 1890.

Francis Richard Rixon married Ada Gerrard Tisbury 5a 452 in 1906.

Here's the rub. On the wedding certificate is shows James Rixon born 1837 V111 402 as Francis's father???? Fred(his father)was a witness?? Francis shows as 21 years old. Born 1885 5 years before his parents married!

Cecily Ellen Hibberd died in 1895 aged 29 5a 117

Could Francis have been adopted? Was Cecily really his mother? Was Fred really his father?

I AM STUCK. There are no records as to Francis Richard Rixon's birth.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Without wishing to sound too critical it would be more helpful to tell us where Tisbury is (Wiltshire) and leave out the GRO Index numbers. The latter don't really mean anything in this query.
Francis Richard Rixon married Ada Gerrard Tisbury 5a 452 in 1906.
In this instance, do you mean Tisbury registration district, or Tisbury the place?

No, it doesn't. All it says is that the vicar wrote James Rixon as the father of Francis. Just based on that entry on the parish register, you have no proof whatsoever of who that James might be.

Fred(his father)was a witness?? Francis shows as 21 years old. Born 1885 5 years before his parents married!
Yes, your parents can be witnesses at your wedding.

Cecily Ellen Hibberd died in 1895 aged 29 5a 117

Have you found Francis with Fred and Cecily on the census? Does Francis's age on the census, tie in with his age on the marriage certifcate? Have you looked for a birth registration for a Francis Richard Hibberd (i.e. born illegitimate, son of Cecily?)

Along with Pam I have been doing some digging.

Why do you think Fred was his father? They never appear together on any census.

Cecily died in 1895 and she and Fred had 3 children:
    Bertram 1890 -1890
    Ethel Lucy 1892 - 1894
    Letta Catherine 1895 - ?

Back tracking on censuses it is clear that Fred was the son of James and Isabella who had many children. Could Francis be the illegitimate son of one of their daughters?

    For starters

    1891 census
    Census reference RG12/1625 folio 10 page 13
    Living Church Steet Wardour
Fred Rixon, head, 27, stone mason
    Cecily, wife, 24
    Both born Tisbury

    1901 census
    Census reference RG13/1961 folio 28 page 11
    Living Snows Hill, East Tisbury
James Rixon, head, 64, stone mason
    Isabella, wife, 61,
Fred, son, 37, widower, stone mason,
Alfred, son, 32, single, stone mason,
    Debora, daur, 24, single,
    Richard, grandson, 16, grocer's assistant,
All born Tisbury, except for Richard who says born London. This could be highly relevant, or it could be enumerator error.

    1911 census
    Census reference RG14/12145 SN128
    Living Duck Street, Tisbury
Richard Rixon, head, 26, painter, Tisbury
    Ada, wife, 28, Frome, Somerset
    Beatrice May, 4, Tisbury

    From me, post #5
All born Tisbury, except for Richard who says born London. This could be highly relevant, or it could be enumerator error.
    From Megan post #4
Francis Rixon 1884 D quarter Marylebone Vol 1A Page 566 no mother's maiden name.
Looks as if that 1901 census entry was very relevant. Good find, Megan.

Paul,I think it might be worth investing seven quid in a black-and-white PDF copy of that birth certificate. Order from https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
Once you've registered on the site, if you 'search the indexes' for births, you get an option to buy either the 'posh copy' or the PDF one.

That birth registration in Marylebone registration district 1884 with no mother's maiden name given (which usually indicates an illegitimate birth) would explain why Francis/Ricard gave James as his father's name when he married. It could be coincidence that he knew his father was called James, or he probably did what one of my (something x great) grandmothers did and said the name of her grandfather with whom she lived when she was young. Caused me no end of problems as I assumed her uncle (also Thomas) was her father. Same relationship as Fred would seem to have to Francis/Richard.
