Default ISAAC AARONS aka AARON c1822-1898

This thread should be read in conjunction with a much earlier thread Catherine Aaron-Dentist 1851 started by me 21.5.2009. In the early thread a lot of data was posted on Catherine Aaron aka Aarons nee CRAWCOUR also known as Kitty Crawcour. In the thread records were posted to show the surname was originally AARONS but the family dropped the letter 's'. The GRO Death Certificate of Catherine Aarons was posted and her husband was named as Aaron AARONS master tailor. A GRO Death Certificate for a Aaron Aarons Red Lion Street was also posted.

At the time I was not accessing Ancestry.Co website and relied on other people to post census and other data which several kindly did. However, there are now many more available records on the lines.

There are several Ancestry Co public family trees which have the name Alford instead of Aaron for Aaron Aarons and these trees also contain a lot of incorrect data. The Aarons and Crawcour families origins are all Jewish as various Synagogue, Cemetery and other records including family trees all confirm.

The focus of this thread is to focus specifically on ISAAC AARONS aka AARON aka CROCKER born circa 1825- died possibly 1898.

The thread is in response to another researcher who has been investigating whether or not they are related to Isaac. The data which will be posted provides information on a Isaac Aaron and his relationship to two women. There is currently no evidence to confirm that he married either woman but he had several children from the relationships. The two women are SARAH FARTHING and ELIZABETH surname unknown.
The data includes reference to London Workhouse records and Baptism records in particular.

In the future posts I will provide census and other records relating to the families.

As a recap on the children of Catherine Aarons aka Aaron nee Crawcour the 1841 Census shows them living at 3 Norwich Court St Andrew Holborn Middlesex (Crown Copyright TNA) HO 107 724 3 3 7 6 14

    Ester 8
    ELIZABETH ARON 55 F
The children all born in county

There is an issue with Catherine being recorded of Foreign Parts because in the 1851 Census she is born Middlesex

By 1851 Catherine was a widow living with her son Moses.

Nb There is a Baptism record for JOSEPH AARON who was the brother of Isaac et al. importantly, this is a very late baptism because he stated he was born in 1822 and the Baptism was in 1855. He gave his parents names.

St John Bethnal Green Baptism Dec 2 1855 -JOSEPH AARON born Oct 2 1822 Parents AARON and CATHERINE AARON - father a Tailor RED LION STREET SPITALFIELDS.
On the same day Joseph's daughter Rachel was baptised born Jan 4 1854 Parents Joseph and Ann Aaron -Tailor 2 B? ..on? Street Bethnal Green

The Baptism record for Joseph in which he names his father as Aaron tailor of Red Lion Street suggests a possible match to the death certificate of Aaron Aarons posted on the Catherine Aaron-Dentist 1851 Thread.

in 1851 Isaac Aarons aka Aaron is living with his brother Joseph but they have adopted the alias CROCKER.
The some of the Aaron brothers had previous trouble with the law and it is possible they adopted Crocker based on the Crawcour family name.
There is a Criminal Record for a Isaac Aaron age 20 b abt 1825 Trial Date 23 Sept 1845 Middlesex Acquittal Degree of Instruction N County Session Clerkenwell 23 Sept Crime Larceny from the Person.

    I will post further.

The following post shows Isaac Aarons aka Aaron aka Crocker living in 1851 with his brother Joseph and in later census with two different women and children.

The key question is whether or not Isaac Aarons aka Aaron aka Aaron who appears in the census and later records is the son of Catherine and Aaron Aarons and also if the two Isaac Aaron with a Sarah and later an Elizabeth aka Eliza are all one in the same person.

As previously stated in an early post on this thread there are no marriage records for Sarah or Elizabeth.
In addition, the Workhouse Records show that Sarah and her son Thomas were in the workhouse and later on several children of Isaac and Elizabeth are also recorded in the workhouse.

The Bethnal Green Orders of Removal London record Sarah FARTHING age 25 born Cosgrove Suffolk with her son Thomas age 14 Illegitimate Suspended Order posted 17 March 1868 Removed 26 Nov 1868.
The order gives more details-Sarah Farthing 25 Typsen?Street previous Romford Examination since xmas having been living at several places last at Whitechapel workhouse. One child Thomas born Knightley's Court thru Cobb Corner Hare Street-13 years age. Daughter of James and Grace Farthing of Chelsworth Suffolk - has a sister Mrs GOYMOUR of Monk Seeley nr Ipswich Suffolk Farmers. Mrs Snell 3 Brunswick Terrace High Street Plaistow. Husband a shoe maker and postman.

The GRO Birth Certificate ( the researcher has ordered a copy) records-ISAAC THOMAS AARON March qtr 1854 Bethnal Green 1c 340. This is believed to be the son of Sarah Farthing and the illegitimate son of Isaac Aaron.

Nb There is no workhouse record to confirm that Isaac Aaron is the father of Thomas but the 1861 census suggests this is possible. However, why Isaac separated from Sarah ( it is unlikely they divorced due to expense)is not known. The separation appears to be dramatic given that Sarah and Thomas were living in an earlier workhouse and other premises. Why and how Isaac Aaron then associated with a Elizabeth and had several children including another Thomas is not known.

    I will post further.

This post provides records on Isaac Aaron and Elizabeth aka Eliza surname unknown with particular focus on the Workhouse records for several of their children and Baptisms.

There are initials by the discharge record F.P.H. and L..?
I do not know what these initial letters refer to.

There are no records in the Workhouse for Isaac and Elizabeth.

Further research is needed to confirm all the family relationships.

The following Marriage Certificate Record has been linked to Thomas Farthing born 1854 son of Sarah Farthing and Isaac Aaron.

    St James Church Bethnal Green
    15 Sept 1878
Thomas Farthing 24 Bachelor Decorator 20 Turin?Street father Thomas Farthing General Dealer
Amelia Mansfield 23 Spinster 63?Richmond Road father William Mansfield ?Maker

    Witnesses Joseph Glyn; Emma Mansfield

Nb The issue is why was Thomas Farthing's father named as Thomas and not Isaac although the General Dealer title appears to match at least some of the census data on Isaac Aaron

There are baptisms for several children:
St James the Great Bethnal Green
Rosi Farthing born 6.11.1891 baptised Oct 21 parents Thomas/Amelia Farthing 61 ?..Street House Decorator
Alice Lavinia Farthing baptised same day born13.2.1894
William Reuben Farthing same day born 30.9.1898

There is a burial record for Amelia Farthing 1914 however there is also a record for a Thomas Farthing in Waterloo Workhouse Bethnal Green which shows him born 1854 and admitted 1896?? and discharged 1909. He is recorded as dying in the workhouse age 75 and his address 93 Old Bethnal Green E Death Feb 3 1930 Myocardial Degeneration Buried by friends.

These records suggest he was not living with Amelia but further research is needed to confirm he is the same Thomas Farthing son of Sarah.

Hi Alma and any other researchers I would appreciate help looking up the following localities:
1 3 Clare Street Bethnal Green Subdistrict Hackney Road Bethnal Green Middlesex - the 3 Clare Stret is the address on the GRO Death Certificate for Catherine AARONS 24 Jan 1858.
Are Clare Street and Hare Street different locations in Bethnal Green?
2 In #3 of this thread reference was made to the Settlement and Removal Orders for Sarah Farthing in 1868-69 when she was in the workhouse. Two addresses were given for where she had lived- Typsen Street?? and her son Thomas born in 1854 was given as born Knightley's Court thru Cobb Corner Hare Street. Any data/reference to these addresses in records would be greatly appreciated

Hi Phillip, there is both a Hare St and Clare St on Bethnal Green census.

There are five families at number 3 Clare St in 1861, RG 9; Piece: 253; Folio: 69; Page: 35
    1) Edward King, wife Eliza and three children
    2)Caroline ?????
3)Samuel ????, wife Eliza and three children
    4)James Costello and wife Ann
5)George Sago or Jago and wife Lucy

I think Typsen Street is perhaps Tyssen Street.

    Knightleys Court 1861 census ref: RG 9; Piece: 262; Folio: 47; Page: 46;
I haven't found Knightley's Court as yet in 1851 but it does seem to have existed then as this article mentions it.

    https://www.victorianlondon.org/publ...sanitary-2.htm

    1848
[-37-] THREE COLT CORNER, &c., 10.-This place is very dirty, garbage lies on all parts of the roadway.
KNIGHTLY COURT, 11.-This court is in a very dilapidated state. In it there are two privies in a beastly state, full, and the contents flowing into the court. There is one dust reservoir. One stand-tap supplies the seven houses. The court at the further end of this court is quite unpaved, and in a nasty filthy state; two cases of severe typhus lately occurred here, one died. These wretched houses are let at 3s. 6d. per week.

There appear to be no GRO Birth Index records for Thomas and George the children of Isaac Aaron/Elizabeth last name unknown. However, Emily Aaron was born Dec 1876 and there is a GRO Birth Index record for Emily Aaron March qtr 1877 Stepney 1c 471- this area included Ratcliff, Shadwell and Mile End. This may or may not be the daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth. If so, the certificate should include the maiden name of the mother plus the father's occupation and the address.
