First, a warm welcome to Brit-gen.

On the 1881 Census William Hyde gives place of birth as Shoreditch, age 32.

The General Register Office (GRO) has the birth registration of -
William Hyde, Mar Qtr 1849, the Shoreditch District, 02 401 - mother's maiden name Bilson

    1851 Census (ref HO107 1535 645 6)
William Hyde, grandson, age 3, born Shoreditch
James Hyde, grandson, age 7, born Shoreditch
The head of household is Sophiah Bilson, widow, age 55, born Beckington (Wilts)

FMP has the marriage registration of a James Hyde, Sep Qtr 1860, Clerkenwell, 1b 804 - on the same page Caroline Bilson

A William Hyde married Sep Qtr 1872, Bethnal Green, 1c 669 - on the same page Mary Ann Saint. Ideally, this would furnish the fathers' names/occpns of bride and groom.

Theres a death registration for -
    James Hyde, Jun Qtr 1867, Shoreditch, 1c 82 - age 49 (born c. 1818)

If this is the James, husband of Caroline Bilson, the marriage certificate may not be carrying details of the groom's father. Only sight of the cert will confirm.

I cannot see the tree on Ancestry to check the provenance of the James Hyde/Caroline Bilson recorded there.

The General Register Office (GRO) has the death registration of a -
    Caroline Hyde, Dec Qtr 1865, Shoreditch, 1c 101 - age 45 (born c. 1820)

This death "fits" the age of Caroline Hyde with husband James 42 and children James 17, William 10 and Caroline 9 on the 1861 Census (RG09 202 7 7)

Re. the 1872 marriage cert of William And Mary Ann, groom's father's details may be missing, but witness names might contribute ie. siblings?

GRO birth registrations - all with mother's maiden name Saint

William JAMES Hyde, Sep Qtr 1875, Bethnal Green, 1c 284
    Millicent Hyde, Jun 1878, Epping , 4a 165
Ethel Francis Hyde, Mar Qtr 1883, Epping 4a 245
Madeline Hilda Hyde, Sep Qtr 1885, Epping,4a 257

I wonder if there is any significance in William naming his 1st born JAMES?

Re post 11 - Beckington is not in Wiltshire but right on the border. It is/was Somerset, or perhaps now Bath & NE Somerset (BANES). Huguenot weavers were at Wilton, with the carpet factory, and elsewhere in other woolen cloth weaving parishes. Just not much silk. pwholt

Thank you! I found the 1851 census for Sophia Bilson on Ancestry, I hadn't seen that one before.

I've seen this marriage certificate but find it confusing because William Hyde was born in 1849, 11 years before their marriage and both of them then died within two years of 1860?

That can happen. If you are certain that the marriage is correct and it's the right William, it's possible that either James or Caroline was a step-parent. I see that they specified bachelor and spinster at their marriage, but these things were rarely checked, just based on info supplied by the couple. Is Caroline mentioned on William's birth cert? That would suggest that they were living together long before their marriage, which suggests that there was a reason that they didn't marry before (often because one member of a couple was already married). They're a little older than I'd expect for a first marriage at that time.

I think you need to put each step under the magnifying glass and confirm each one. Who is named on what, where and when... What does the 1851 census say? Do you have both parents in the 1841?
