In 1851 I think they may poss be in Brighton as servants to the Laurence family, both married. Piece 1646, f285, p37 (though a different occupation from the James in the 1860 marriage)

There's a strong candidate for James on the '41 Census -
James Hyde, 22, Painter, born in County (Middlesex) - address Radnor Street, St Luke, Finsbury (Note - the ages are'nt rounded down)

Gisel has very likely spotted (good spot!!) the couple in Brighton in 1851 - James born St Lukes, Caroline born Trowbridge, Wilts.

In 1861 (ref RG09 202 7 7) the family are together - James 42, Carolyn 41, James 17, William 10 and Caroline 9. However, James gives his PoB as Cork, Ireland.
