Default John William Platt b. 1829

Here goes with my first post

Looking for more information on John William Platt, born 1829.

He immigrated to Port Adelaide, Australia 30th May 1850 on the Trafalgar from London 16th December 1849 via Plymouth 26th December 1849.

If it helps he married Mary Ann Wilde in Adelaide South Australia on 23rd/24th November 1850 and died 23rd March 1866.

Guess I'm looking for a actual birthdate and his parents and any other information that could be found.

    Thank you very much.

    Welcome in!
All extra crumbs of information can be useful in sorting the wanted person from any others. For example, what did he do for a living. If he had a job that involved a lot of training, he likely carried on with it. Was there more information on the Trafalgar’s passenger list? Another relative, maybe?

Did John and Mary have any children, and if so, what were they called?

Also, from which piece(s) of information are you basing his birth year of 1829? People weren't so obsessed with ages back then and as has been shown on the censuses people's ages did vary by several years.

If I have the right man, children born in SA seem to be:

    Rachel 1852
    John William 1855
    George 1857
    Joseph 1860
    Rebecca 1862
    John 1865

The names of the children certainly tie in with the parents being George & Rachel, but where the middle name 'William' comes in I don't know. It also seems odd that he was John William on the births of his children but only 'John' at death, and I can't trace that passenger record either :/

The reports of his death say he was a Government turncock and for many years a member of the Insurance Companies Fire Brigade. Buried at Hindmarsh Cemetery.

It seems he was also a member of the Ancient Order of Foresters

A Google search brought up local wiki for Adelaide Hills, which lists several entries apparently confirming the above information, although some seems a bit muddled:

PLATT, Mr turncock Adelaide (Waymouth St) 1864 Application 5092

PLATT, John William turncock in the Government Service Adelaide (Roper St), died c1866. He left his estate in trust to his wife, Mary Ann Platt, for life, and then to his children, Rachel Platt, Joseph Platt, Rebecca Platt and John Platt, in equal shares absolutely in remainder expectant Memorial 135/213

PLATT, John William moulder and ironworker* Adelaide, died 23/3/1866, of consumption, aged 37. By 1898, his widow, Mary Ann Platt, lived at Bowden. Family as of 1898 - Rachel GREEN wife of William Green, Joseph Platt, Rebecca Green, wife of Samuel Green, and John Platt Application 23662

*I think the reference to moulder & ironworker has been muddled with this chap (listed as Platt but in a group of people named Plate)- PLATT, John moulder Bowden 1855 Memorial 143/83

Thank you all very much for this information. I'll have a closer look and see if my mum has any further information that she might not have given me.
