Default Irish Regiments To Newcastle WW2

Hi, was Just wondering if there's anyway of finding out which Irish Regiments (Dublin?) were stationed in Newcastle UK, during WW2. Am looking for a soldier called John Fitzsimons,
who came from Dublin.. Unfortunately I don't know which regiment, All the information I have
is that he was born 1904 in Dublin. And that his regiment were for a time in Newcastle.

If anybody has any helpful info, or can give me nod in the right direction..I would be grateful....

    Kind Regards

The Irish Free State (the Republic of Ireland from 1949) was a neutral country during WW2. No “Irish regiments” from Dublin participated. Many Irish people did however join the British Army. Some joined regiments such as the Inniskillings. But if John served in the war it was in a British regiment. Can’t help you with which regiment.

What do you know about him, Ness?
For a start, did he survive the war? Commonwealth War Graves have 2 John F entries - one in the Merchant Navy, died aged 47 in 1940, the other is too young, having died in 1942 aged 23 (Royal Artillery). There's also John Joseph aged 41 in 1941, Military Police with parents Patrick & Kate resident in Co Meath, Irish Republic.

Sometimes even the smallest crumb of info helps.

Thankyou both for your replies, Very informative.

Lesley, Yes he survived the war,John Christopher Fitzsimons. He was born in Dublin 1903/4, but his family lived in Wales. His wife was Dorothy they lived in LLannely (spelling?). He was based for a time in Newcastle, It seems servicemen didn't need to be listed on the 1939 Register... And trying to find much detail regarding his WW2 records is becoming a bit difficult. Can we not get pensions details etc from any online sites?? Are we able to actually get any information like this?

Any suggestions will be gratefully accepted..

WW2 service records are still held by the MOD. They are not on-line anywhere. There is a procedure for applying for them. The service person has to be dead and there’s a fee to pay. There used to be a wait of about 1 year. I don’t know if that’s still the case. (Others will know I am sure).

If you don’t already have John’s birth, it appears to have been on 19.3.1903 at 33 North Clarence St, Dublin. Parents John Fitzsimons and Rose McCann.

Further to the above, possible parents marriage on 15.8.1897 in Co. Meath:

This looks like them in 1901:

MGWR on the census is Midland & Great Western Railway.

Yes, it's much shorter now. I think it was about three months when I applied for my uncle's last year. Might have been a little less.

Full details of how to apply, plus links to the forms needed are at

Please read the details carefully, as there are certain rules pertaining to the amount of information given to people who are not direct descendants. You will also need a copy of John's death certificate.
