    Hi Elwyn
John Anderson was alive in 1890, living at 4 Braemar Street, but dead before 1900 (Ellen is a widow at her death in 1900) https://streetdirectories.proni.gov....IdvyCFO1--A..a

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy....47/4623006.pdf

I found a different one - John Anderson of 14 Cooke Street, died 2 Mar 1896 at Belfast City Cemetery. I searched each year for the matching name and age criteria

    Thank you for your assistance

Ah yes I see that one now. He had been in the Royal Artillery and had a son in law J. Stephens. I presume that information fits with what you know of the family?

To be honest it was the only other one that fits in Belfast outside of looking for an older John i.e. one born before 1820 which is possible. If Ellen was born 1823 then John could have been older. I have a lovely picture of an elderly John but little insight of his activities. Samuel Hamilton Anderson, his son, had an exemplary war record.

Samuel enrolled for military service with the 59th Regiment of Foot, in Belfast, 18 June 1870, aged 19 years old from being a labourer. He was awarded the Afghan War Medal + Clasp and was discharged 1 Dec 1891. His next of kin, was noted as his father (John) living in Broadway Belfast.

The grave that John Anderson (died 2.3.1896) is buried in also contains Mary A died 25.9.1906 aged 85, who looks to have been his wife. This seems to be her in the 1901 census:

    https://www.census.nationalarchives.i...Street/971514/

Her death certificate describes her as “widow of John Anderson Army pensioner.” The informant was her son Robert of 65 Donegall Pass, Belfast.

So that seems to marry her to John Anderson of 14 Cooke St OK but your John was married to Ellen. So probably not the right John?

Catherine Stephens was married to James Stephens. This is them in 1901:

So Catherine Stephens was presumably born Anderson. She was born in India, as was James.

    Hi Elwyn
I had one older record, John died 13 Sep 1902, Whitehead, widower - contradicts Ellen as a widower but the location is spot on. Aged 90 implies 1812 date of birth. I have not heard of a Ethel Anderson. I also can see no evidence that John and Ellen were together in their later life

Seperately i found a john junior died 1841 aged 26 in Carrickfergus - implies date of birth 1815 for a brother but more importantly a father called John -

The John who died in Whitehead had his death reported by James Crawford, also of Whitehead. James relationship to the deceased was son in law. John’s occupation is given as retired linen merchant (suggesting he was a man of some means). This looks to be the two of them in the 1901 census. John’s occupation there is retired teacher, which is somewhat different to linen merchant but it seems likely to be the same man.

Did your John have a daughter named Juliana born in Co Down c1862? (That couple married in Belfast on 7th April 1900. Juliana’s father’s occupation was given as linen manufacturer).

    Hi Elwyn

Thank you, from Ellen's will there is no mention of a Juliana, Ellen spells out her family: Margaret Brennan, Matilda, William John, Samuel, Robert, David and Agnes (no mention of John her husband)

Find the death / birth of john is challenging

    Thank you for your assistance

Perhaps John didn't die in Ireland?

    Default John Anderson's Military Record

    Hi Elwyn and everyone

I have been researching the detail of John and his son's military records; William John, his eldest son, appears to have attended the Royal Hibernian Military School (RHMS) before serving, his father's regiment is noted as 59th Foot, 2nd Nottinghamshire, this is also one of Samuel's regiments, another son. Another school record points at the father's regiment of 20th of Foot (Devonshire regiment)

In your comment above you mention the Royal Artillery - I cannot find that connection but would be very grateful on your source please. If I can find John's service record then I might be able to find his next of kin and his true date of birth (~1821)!

I have also seen two indexes of a John Anderson born in the army both in 78th Foot: one in 1818 in Mullingar and one in 1822 in Enniscrotty. This might also be able to collaborate John's date of birth

The key record are William Anderson's military school record(s) which points to 59th Foot

It's given as his occupation on his death certificate (Pensioner Royal Artillery):
